Start of inoculations in Thailand delayed due to EU export restrictions

Delivery by air of the first shipment of 50,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from Italy has hit a snag, due to the European Union’s recently imposed restriction on the export of the vaccine, causing Thailand’s plan to commence vaccination on February 14th to be postponed, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told the media Thursday afternoon, following a meeting of the national vaccine committee.

 

Despite the delay, he expressed confidence that the first consignment will still arrive in Thailand in February, adding that it will be followed by another 100,000 doses from Italy.

 

Initially, the vaccine is intended for the frontline medics responsible for the screening of people and for the treatment of those regarded as being at the highest risk of becoming infected.

Thailand is really getting the short end of the stick on this one.

The vaccine nationalism going on is truly tragic as without timely global vaccinations, the world won't be on a path of recovery.

So much for the bureaucratic EU ! Hopefully all these companies will now move to the UK where they can do normal business without EU officialdom telling them who, where and when they can ship their goods !

Could it be that Thailand was slow at the mark to order the vaccine and relied on the Chinese vaccine rather than the more sought after ones? either that, or supply to third world nation have been put on the back burner seeing Thailand have very few death and few infected people...

But I have my doubts about what Anutin says.

So far, the EU has not yet restricted exports of vaccine. That restriction is a treath against the UK: The UK factory of Astrazenica refuses to send vaccine to the EU, so now the EU threatens to block the deliveries of Pfizer Belgium to the UK. Other countries are not involved.

It was all over the news tha Astra Zenica has problem with the production and delivery of the vaccin. Orders of European countries are cut with 60%.  So no restrictions , but other reasons that the vaccin can't be in time

20/years ago british buisness was screaming from the rooftops about how eu legislation was making them uncompetetive seems like historys going to repeat itself,and where will this act leave the eu and british ex pats who chose to live in thailand?doubtless they,ll be at the back of the queue for vaccine and if corona gets a grip and thailand is put on the list returning brits will have to pay for 10 days compulsory quarantine should they return.

Not really such a big deal, after all, 50,000 doses for 25,000 people!!! It was never a great start to Thailand's vaccination plan anyway. They went cap in hand for this measly number of vaccines after realizing they've dropped the ball. They should should have accepted the offer of 2 million doses of the same vaccine from India, it would have been here by now!!

Is someone been economic with the truth. Haven't heard of the astrazenaca vaccine been produced in italy yet and think most of it is produced in uk. Problems are with supply, and just rumours/threats of EU blocking the pfizer vaccine, especially to the UK, if they don't get all their seneca vaccine. Fortunately or unfortunately think seneca have said UK will get all their contractual supply. This is what's causing EU spat as they say it cannot be on a first come basis. Can see it all turning ugly at some point. Another possible downside for Thailand is they haven't officially got a very high infection or problem with covid, very few death's, and maybe seen as a not so urgent case for supply on medical priority, discounting contractual obligations.

And last week these arrogant morons of the Thai government, namely foreign minister Don, rejected the offer from India to supply 2 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine to Thailand! Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and others are already vaccinating their people with the vaccine from India.

 

Before these clowns complain about lousy 50,000 missing doses from Europe, they should look into the mirror and blame themselves for their criminal and selfish negligence of rejecting 2 million easily available doses.

“India and Thailand have close and friendly relations and many countries across the world, including many in Southeast Asia, have opted to purchase our vaccines. Thailand is also welcome to do so and that the Indian Embassy would be happy to facilitate it,” Ambassador Suchitra Durai told Thai Enquirer."

I can’t see why any right minding government would reject such an offer, although I note reference to China’s regional influence is mentioned. ????

India is also producing the higher quality AZ vaccine under license.

It still baffles me why Thailand doesn’t seem interested in negotiating for other viable vaccines; Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax. Indonesia and the Philippines are trying to get as many as possible

The EU is interfering with a privately owned company and its business operations because Brussels couldn't get its plans in order 6 months ago - AZ should tell them to get stuffed

UK has already ordered over 50 million doses of Novamax. A vaccine said to be very effective against original strain.

 

AstraZeneca has stated they  have  some  teething problems at their European production sites which have put them behind on their targets.EU don't like this and are demanding that they make up the shortfall from UK production site and have also threatened tp ban export of any European production.

 

It's their own fault as they were slow off the mark in ordereing any vaccines. Funny thing is, I think the AstraZeneca vaccine is still not approved for use in the EU. At least it wasn't two days ago.

 

One thing the UK seems to have got right is ordering vaccines.
