Thai government to purchase a further 35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines

The Thai Cabinet on Tuesday approved the purchase of another 35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

 

The government has  set aside a budget of 6.387 billion Baht for the purchase, government spokesperson Anucha Buropchaisri told Daily News.

 

Some 5.6 billion Baht of the budget will be used to purchase the AstraZeneca made vaccine, while 700 million Baht will be set aside for management and distribution of rollout of  the vaccine.

 

The new batch will be used alongside the 26 million doses of the AstraZeneca  vaccine and the 2 million doses of Sinovac already purchased by the government.

 

This means Thailand has around 63 million doses of  COVID-19 vaccines, which is enough to vaccinate more than 50 percent of the population.

 

Meanwhile, the government will continue to source further doses of the vaccine, Mr Anucha said.

 

The news comes as the Thai government announced on Tuesday that members of the public will be able to register to receive the vaccine from early May, before the government’s vaccination drive which is set to begin in June.

 

Previously, the government had said that everyone in Thailand - including foreign expats - will be eligible to receive the vaccine.

Pretty sure people under the age of 18 (16?) may not be eligible, now. Not yet authorized for use.

 

And some fourteen provinces haven't had a single COVID case EVER.

 

Not sayin' I don't want to see everyone who is a candidate get a vaccine but let's be reasonable. Getting 30+ million vaccinated would be a brilliant result, I think. I am not a virologist, nor do I play one on TV,

 

 

and those numbers do NOT include foreigners living and/or working here.  somebody ought to subscribe to higher math.

Supposedly , SB will be producing 10million doses per month from June...which is only 3 months away.

 

Thailand will not be able to vaccinate 30million people between now and then, so why order so much now?

 

...and if the answer is the these vaccines will arrive after June...then something is amiss.

    No, Thailand does NOT have 63 million doses.  What it has is contracts to buy the doses--and who knows when they will be delivered.  What it has is a small amount of vaccine--that apparently is going to politicians and hisos.  

It is kind of ? why Pfizer and Moderna hasn't applied for Emergency use of their vaccine to the Thai FDA, it seem they have put all their faint in A/Z since they have a contract to produce no competition kind of obvious what the result will be

$$$$  it would be wise maybe to get your hands on the J&J the more option the quicker the distribution the sooner you can open the country without these bright ideas laughable idea's!????

???? that would make your comprehension of current events isn't any better, but this is typical farang that we see here (especially at TV) everyday. Your 69,915,243 people, you included babies, younger children, and people with various illness who aren't eligible for vaccination for obvious reasons.

Clinical trials are underway now for under 18's with AZ so by June the results will be out, all expectations are that they will be cleared for use in under 18's. There's currently no logical reason why they should not. 

 

Or perhaps Thailand will be relying on the Sinovac rubbish for the remainder? Thailand's "C.P" conglomerate has a 15% stake in Sinovac. Plenty of brown envelopes available there.

Just curious, but why does Thailand have to import 35 million doses when a local manufacturer given rights to manufacturer the vaccine?  Wasn't the point of "stopping the pandemic in SE Asian" all about granting rights to a Thai company to make and distribute to countries within the ASEAN sphere.  But instead?   Imports.   What's that about?  Just wondering.

Who said anything about imports? The Astrazeneca vaccines are being made here but still have to be purchased by the government. 

Is it possible to get the vaccine before June? I plan to visit the UK.

It isn't and is unlikely to become available privately before June. But at the current rate of vaccination and decline in cases plus the warmer weather, there should be very few cases of Covid in the UK by June so you can go there free of worry and get your free vaccination while you're there.

they could get the china or Russian much quicker ans easy payment terms and cheaper? both are over 85% and it has been proven also been available  6 months  any vaccine now will help the recovery.

You'll need to get tested before departure, isolate at home for 10 days and do 2 home tests at a cost of £210.

Maybe the same situation as Levi jeans being made here but still very expensive. Listen to made in Thailand

My guess is that, once vaccination of the general population pushes infection levels back below 0.1% again, the annual covid jab will simply be given to the same segment of the population who get flu vaccines every year, and probably at the same time.

There has never been any logical reason to lock down the entire population rather than re-focus the limited resources on shielding the individuals who were actually vulnerable. The human race, through a mixture of modern media hysteria, social media panic, and weak politicians, has been corralled into a stunning overreaction that will be marveled over for centuries to come.
