LONDON (Reuters) - Piers Morgan, the pugnacious British TV presenter who lost his job over his attacks on Prince Harry's wife Meghan, said on Wednesday he still did not believe what she had said during her Oprah Winfrey interview.

Morgan, 55, left ITV's Good Morning Britain on Tuesday after a backlash against his comments on Meghan's interview with Winfrey, in which she revealed she had felt suicidal while living as a royal in Britain.

"On Monday, I said I didn't believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I've had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don't. If you did, OK," Morgan said in a characteristically combative Tweet on Wednesday morning.

"Freedom of speech is a hill I'm happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I'm off to spend more time with my opinions," he told his 7.8 million Twitter followers.

He added a photo of Winston Churchill with a quote on free speech.

In an interview that has embarrassed Britain's tradition-bound monarchy, Meghan, who married Prince Harry in 2018, said the royal family had rejected her pleas for mental health support.

The American actress, who is mixed race, also said that someone in the royal household had raised questions about the colour of her unborn son's skin.

The morning after the interview was aired on U.S. television, Morgan said on Good Morning Britain, among a torrent of other criticisms, that he did not believe a word Meghan had said. In a Tweet, he called her "Princess Pinocchio".

The following morning, he stormed off the set of the live programme when challenged by a co-presenter about his stance. Later that day, ITV said he was leaving.

Monday's programme attracted more than 41,000 complaints to Britain's media regulator, the second highest in its history, which announced an investigation.

Morgan first made his name in the cut-throat world of the British tabloid press, culminating in stints editing the now-defunct News of the World, then the Daily Mirror.

He later went into television, appearing as a judge on the reality shows America's Got Talent and Britain's Got Talent. For three years he hosted a chat show on CNN.

Morgan's detractors said his attitude towards Meghan seemed to be partly driven by personal animus because, by his own account, he had got on "brilliantly" with her when he had first met her but she had later dropped contact with him.

Susanna Reid, who co-presented Good Morning Britain with Morgan and frequently disagreed with him on air, described him on Wednesday's programme as "outspoken, challenging, opinionated, disruptive".

Morgan told reporters on Tuesday he thought Meghan's interview had damaged the monarchy and Queen Elizabeth at a time when her 99-year-old husband Prince Philip was in hospital, which he said was "contemptible".

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it," he said.

Highly inaccurate and out of date. He  said he was wrong to say Megan wasn't really feeling suicidal. Furthermore, he quit GMB (Good Morning Britain) and was not 'dumped' by ITV as this headline would have you believe. I detest Mr Morgan and think he's way off the mark most of the time, but fair is fair. Here is what he actually said yesterday:

Before his departure on Tuesday, Morgan did concede that it was "not for me to question if she felt suicidal".

On Wednesday,he also said: "I think it's fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they've cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge."

He added that his forthcoming absence from screens would be "a temporary hibernation", and that he was "always in talks with people" about offers of work.

I'm no fan of Morgan (aka Piers Moron, as Private Eye like to call him) but I'm with him on this one. His 'co-presenter' - actually the weatherman, was banging on about how MM's "lived experience' and "her truth" meant that what she said had to be true. Morgan simply made the point that things are either true or false; in this case, the false accusation that "the Palace" didn't want their kid to have the title of Prince because he was mixed-race. The facts are mundane: the rules of precedence and all that stuff don't allow for the son of the 11th in line to the throne (or whatever Harry is) to be called a Prince. MM however apparently chooses to ignore these inconvenient facts for "her truth".

Morgan was also given a hard time by the weatherman for allegedly having personal bias against MM. So what? MM isn't an anonymous privacy-loving member of the general public, she's an arch self-promoter who, like everyone in showbiz, lives and breathes being in the public eye. So she's fair game.

Prince Harry seems to be like some lobotomised Stepford Husband these days. Prince Andrew Mk 2; served his country, in harm's way, for which he deserves respect, but then throwing it all away when in thrall to a woman more powerful than him. Harry's relationship with his dad and Camilla must be appalling for him to stand by and let MM do what she's done.

Classic Reuters.

He wasn't dumped, he was asked to apologize and rightly refused. I suspect he has another lucrative offer lined up, possibly with someone like GBNews who are more open to people having opinions that don't necessarily toe the Woke line.

The big loser in all this will be ITV and GMB. Ratings will plummet without Morgan (who I personally don't like BTW).

Go Woke, Go Broke.

He walked off the set - after that I don't know what happened.  It was a fire-able offense... but I suspect he already has something lined up with more money since the whole scene seems to be an overreaction almost like it was staged by him.   Either that or he is a sniveling cry baby who can dish it out but if challenged he takes his ball and goes home.

The guy has been an unpleasant moron all his life. As a newspaper editor, he represented the very worst in UK journalism, together with that Kelvin McKenzie creature.  I'm glad he's gone from TV and we don't have to see his supercilious expressions any more or listen to his idiotic opinions and  rants, I just hope its permanent.

you are correct, all a cover up by the royals as their modo  "no complain no explain" Andrew was to appear in US court, William bragged about Rashford work to help poor kids, William backed BLM movement but all of it just hypocrisy....,

why does England needs a royal family, what's their purpose besides making money, what's their contribution to the UK people, do they help needy families, do they have a say so in government, why not call it Republic of England and stop that monarch non sense

He was a journalist, and leading presenter on a daily news magasine TV program. He was hired for this, and many other posts because he was opinionated.

I don't much like him but he was right about free speech.

I wonder whether the fellow he clashed with and caused him to walk out (I believe he was the weatherman?) Will appear in Morgan's chair once the dust has settled - at a casual glance he seems to tick so many "woke boxes"!

Normally I find Morgan's strong attitude and expressed views unpalatable, however, in broad terms I agee with him.  Several statements Harry and Megan have made make me cringe.  He said all that he had when he left UK was what he had inherited from his Mother.  What he failed to say was that that amounted to over £10 million, that it was topped up by a further £4 million and that she has about £3.5 million.  Poor didums them - so broke!  She also complained that someone mentioned their son may have evidence of colour in him.  Well, hello, Granny is definately coloured and presumaby his Mummy has some in her DNA and what is wrong with that?  Are they ashamed that the Boy might have a smidgen of colour evident, instead of being proud of his heritage.  I also cannot help but think that Harry was a highly popular and successful young Army Officer - sure he got up to high jinks, but don't all young people to one degree or another?  But along comes this Actress and all of a suddent Harry changes and anyone who is anyone dares to criticise them is the Devil Incarnate.  They say they want privacy and to be left alone by the Media, so what do they do.  They go on not one, but two of America's most popular shows to complain about how badly they have been done by.  They also expect free protection services, paid by the UK tax payer and their little boy to be appointed a Prince forthwith.  It was their decision to leave UK, so Protection is your responsibility and as for the Boy becoming a Prince, there is a protocol for that to happen and he is no where near the age to be appointed a Prince, which Harry knows well!

As for some of the American Wokes and I include Biden in that, saying how brave they are is unbelievable and I believe that our Prime Minister should not arrange for him and his Wife to be fetted at the Palace by the Queen when they come to the UK, due to his insulting comment about our Royal Family.

Reuters does not report the truth. They publish articles with the intent to direct the narrative. In this case Reuters intention was to discredit Morgan. Personally, I agreed with him, 100%. But I'm not woke...  However, I am anti-racist.

No. He walked off the set. Then had a meeting with his boss after there were 40,000 complaints and then was gone.

He has always been the lowest common denominator. He was awful as the replacement for Larry King at CNN where he constantly had Donald Trump in as a guest. DT was someone that always could be counted on as needing attention when other guests weren't available

They all 'start' somewhere, unless you're born into it. (Anderson Cooper and Chris Wallace comes to mind)

40k complaints is hardly a drop in the bucket. You're entitled to your opinion though.

If I paid for a TV licence here I would want my money back now wall to wall all of this cartel except 1 needs to get in the news 24/7 covid what covid ????
