BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has spent more than Bt8.3 billion on two farmer aid schemes to help rice farmers nationwide.

Government House’s Thai Khu Fah Facebook page said the state allocated Bt3.83 billion to support more than 110,000 households in the rice farmers’ income guarantee scheme. The government has also earmarked Bt4.50 billion for farmers who agree to delay selling off their paddy.

Payments under this scheme are made based on two regulations - farmers who store their paddy in their barn get Bt1,500 per ton, and farmers who sell their paddy to farming cooperatives get Bt500 per ton, while the cooperative gets Bt1,000 per ton.

Meanwhile, farmers now have until March 31 to take special loans, while those in the South can do so until July 31.

Thats not for selling it, that is what they will get to just store it.  Wonder if I can get paid to store my extra dry goods in the hall closet of my condo, which can be locked.....

Oh, thank you.  That confused me. Now if my government just paid me to store the 8,000 pounds of machinery and tools I have in my garage I'd be all set.

Over the last decade Thailand has destroyed it's once profitable rice trade by getting greedy & price fixing.

Smells more like arrogance than Hom Mali these days.

Instead of doling out subsidies to support farmers, why not bring the Baht down, so they could sell more rice on the international market?

I guess the hi-sos would be furious......they are busy buying up central London.

Who is going to be the judge of how much is stored......and........ is it actual (all) rice........seems fraught with dangers this scheme.

Most farmers store some rice in order to plant it in May or June.  So will they count the rice stored for that purpose, too?  Not enough details here.

Bearing in mind the 'inventiveness' of the Thais and the hard-ships of your average rice farmer I can see this being  very difficult to manage.

What is the difference between this "rice subsidy system" and the "illegal" one of Yingluck Shinawatra?

No ones been accused of a fake G2G sale, nor warehouses stocked with rotted rice as of yet.

I just rented the apartment next door, all furniture out and went straight to Tesco, BigC and 7/11 to buy all rice they had in stock.

Where can I apply for the subsidy?
