Debate on what defines market monopoly now left up to court

A merger that could essentially wipe out mom-and-pop stores in Thailand has sparked a public outcry leading to legal action.

Consumer groups led by the Foundation for Consumers on March 15 filed a lawsuit against the Office of Trade Competition Commission (OTCC). The case calls on the Administrative Court to cancel OTCC’s decision to allow agribusiness giant Charoen Pokphand Group’s acquisition of UK retailer Tesco’s operations in Thailand.

This call is also backed by a veteran economist. OTCC, Thailand’s anti-trust authority, voted 4:3 last November to allow CP Retail Development Co to acquire Tesco Stores Thailand Ltd in a US$10.6-billion (Bt328 billion) deal.

Has CP actually bought/taken over Tesco?

Last week was the big story about it's name is going to be Lotus's, this week several posters said that prices and staff service had changed since the takeover, and yet here they want to overturn the decision to ALLOW CP to take over. What's going on?

A bit late now. I've been buying Lotus's products for a few weeks already.

The second paragraph below made me laugh. Do you need 100% to be considered a monopoly?

Consumer groups argue that after the acquisition, CP’s share of the wholesale and retail market will rise to 83.97 per cent, resulting in a market monopoly that erodes fair competition and hurts consumers’ rights for free choice.

Though most commissioners acknowledged that the two retailers who run 7-Eleven stores and Tesco hypermarts are dominating the Thai retail sector, they claimed this presence is not strong enough to be considered a monopoly.

corruption.

unsafe highways, filthy air and water and now unhealthily food choices rammed down your throat.

eat your 7 eleven garbage.

Yes.

And it was approved by the Trade Competition Commission.

But are things ever really official here? Whoever gets the gaurda wins I guess.

It's changing name to "Lotus's", sign changing and rename of own product brand has already begun.

Absolutely criminal....the only thing this take over will achieve is the eradication of cartels designed to fix prices.

Goverment is showing favoritism. If this inst a monopoly then what is.

unfortunately the higher up government people won't let any other supermarket chains in to come and compete they must be getting a cut or too afraid to let it happen

In my neck of the woods we've got Big C, Lotus, CJ and 7-11, out of town a bit Makro
that's our choice.
