DENVER (Reuters) - Police in Boulder, Colorado, reported an "active shooter" at a grocery store on Monday, and aerial footage broadcast live from the scene by local media showed a bloodied man being escorted away in handcuffs and loaded into an ambulance.

 

The Twitter alert from police said the incident unfolded at a King Soopers grocery store in the Table Mesa area of Boulder, a city at the eastern foot of the Rockies about 28 miles northwest of Denver.

 

Hours later, Boulder police issued a second tweet saying officers were responding to a report of an "armed, dangerous individual" at a separate location about 3 miles away, and that investigators were seeking to determine "if this is related to (the) King Soopers shooting."

 

One man who said he was shopping inside the store with his wife told KCNC-TV that he heard three loud bangs he took for gunshots, and ran through the store with other customers to escape through a loading bay at the rear of the building.

He said the apparent shots sounded like they came from the checkout area at the front of the store.

 

Video from the scene broadcast by local television station KDVR-TV showed a shirtless, bearded man in boxer shorts being led away in handcuffs, and one person on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. The man in custody appeared to have a bloody leg.

 

Similar footage aired later by KCNC-TV showed the bloodied man in handcuffs being placed onto a stretcher and into the back of an ambulance. KCNC said no one else injured in the shooting was known to have been taken away by ambulance from the scene.

 

A Boulder Community Health spokesman, Rich Sheehan, said one person taken by ambulance to the hospital from the supermarket was undergoing medical treatment, but Sheehan declined to describe the nature of injuries or the patient's condition.

 

Dean Schiller, who described himself as a journalist and who was live-streaming footage from the scene for a YouTube channel identified as ZFG Videography, said in interviews with local media he heard what sounded like gunshots as he exited the grocery store. Schiller also said he saw three apparent shooting victims, but had no information about their conditions.

 

A short time later in a parking lot outside the store, Schiller said, he saw police officers surround a sport utility vehicle as they ordered its occupants to come out.

 

 

TV news footage showed police leading customers and workers out of the store with hands on their heads. Aerial footage also showed a heavy law enforcement presence outside the supermarket, along with at least two ambulances.

 

Table Mesa is home to the hilltop laboratory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The supermarket is located about 2 miles from the University of Colorado's flagship campus.

 

Colorado Governor Jared Polis said on Twitter he was monitoring events unfolding in Boulder, adding, "My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans in this time of sadness and grief as we learn more about the extent of the tragedy."

 

The FBI said on Twitter that its agents were assisting local police in the investigation of the supermarket shooting.

Two mass shootings in as many weeks.

 

After a year of dealing with COVID it looks like things are finally returning to normal in the US

Sad to say this is what constitutes 'American Exceptionalism'. Other countries occasionally experience mass shootings, but they are mere posseurs when it comes to America and senseless random violence. Nobody does it 'better'.

 

Out for some food shopping.......

 

"Give me half a pound of ground sirloin, and two 124 grain full metal jackets, please"

 

Mention Norway and everybody knows his name. Same for New Zealand and Australia. In the US, it's 'take a number...can't tell the perps without a scorecard'.

 

In the news video, one can see at least 100 fully kitted-out troops descending on the property to go after that single shooter, some arriving in heavily armored vehicles. All that money and all that military firepower, and yet next week there will be another mass shooting and more needless deaths.

 

And what will be the answer? More guns, of course. Guns for teachers, school janitors, supermarket checkout clerks, priests, pastors and rabbis, cinema ushers, fast food workers, nightclub bouncers......

 

Yea, yea....'thoughts and prayers'.

 

I guess the perp was 'having a really bad day'. Isn't that what we say now?

I'm back in Colorado now and I was just at that store on Saturday!

Of course we all want to know the motive.  But even more importantly in this day and age, what was the race of the killer. 

This may have an impact on the outrage from certain quarters.

For those who don't know the specifics on guns....early reports are the killer used an AR-15, a semi-auto rifle that generally carries a 30-rd mag of 5.56 NATO ammo that has a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps. With a 16" barrel, the weapon can be fired with precision from a few hundred meters, and certainly can wreak havoc in close quarters. Anyone in the vicinity 'carrying', who is the proverbial 'good guy with a gun' is likely carrying a handgun, maybe a 9mm with a 4" barrel, firing rounds at perhaps 1000 fps. Precision and accuracy is not easy with a small handgun when under no pressure; it's worse when one is trying to face a killer with an AR-15.

 

Using the laws of mass and motion, one can calculate that one 55 grain 5.56 NATO round has more kinetic energy (aka, killing power) than a 124 grain 9mm round. Almost FOUR TIMES more. The key is velocity, as it's squared in the calcs, and the 5.56 leaves the barrel at 3200 fps vs maybe 1000 fps for the 9mm 'good guy with a gun'.

 

NRA crowing about this just a few days is probably a bad look?

 

 

Victory in Colorado Preemption Case

 

On Friday evening, a judge in the Centennial state gave law-abiding gun owners something to celebrate. He ruled that the city of Boulder’s ban on possessing and transferring commonly-possessed “assault weapons” and ten-round magazines was preempted by state law and struck them down. This was an NRA-ILA supported case.

 

The city council should have listened to the city attorney. His repeated attempts to warn them that they did not have the authority to pass these ordinances were cited throughout the opinion. The opinion is also very thoroughly and thoughtfully written, which will make it even harder to overturn, should the city appeal it.

Boulder’s assault weapons ban unenforceable for time being after district court ruling

 

Boulder will not be enforcing the city’s assault weapons ban after a district court ruled that a state statute preempts local governments from restricting gun sales and possession.

 

Judge Andrew Hartman on March 12 ruled that only state or federal laws can prohibit the possession, sale and transfer of assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Colorado has passed laws “that are effectively a scheme preempting local governments from enacting municipal firearms and magazine possession ordinances,” according to court documents.

 

The complaint, first filed in June 2018 by Boulder residents Robert Lynn Chambers and James Michael Jones against the city, argues that Boulder’s ban is invalid because sections of it conflict with state law.

We know how this will go.  There'll be lots of "thoughts and prayers" from the politicians for the victims and families.  But if anyone wants to bring up prevention and/or gun control, the usual suspects will resist even the mere discussion and complain that "we shouldn't be using this national tragedy for political gain!"  Which is to say, NOTHING will come of this and there will be another mass shooting in the not so distant future.   

There is simply no way out of these nightmare shootings......like it or not guns are there to stay in the US.......and there will always be enough crazies to use them.........it is or has become a way of life (or death).

You would have to ban all guns, confiscate all guns, stop and frisk all people at all times, seal the border 100% and pass a law that says life in prison if you're caught with a gun. People don't seem to understand what would be involved and why it's not feasible.

Officer Talley was probably carrying a 9mm handgun. When facing a killer with an AR-15, that's like Amir Faisal raising his sword while riding horseback as the Turkish biplanes bombed and shot up the Bedu encampment in Lawrence of Arabia.

I hope I am wrong also....but unfortunately, I'm always right re guns in the USA.  Maybe, just maybe, President Biden can change the narrative.  But I'm sure he knows that the right wing will go absolutely bat-sht crazy if he brings up anything that will restrict gun ownership even a little bit.  They're salivating right now at even the thought.
