The release of Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob’s timeline has failed to dampen public curiosity about his movements before he tested positive for COVID-19. Even after he launched legal action against two social-media users for suggesting he may have caught the virus at a nightspot in Bangkok’s upscale Thong Lor area, rumours about his nightlife habits are still raging.

 

Thai PBS World takes a closer look at the details in a bid to shed light on this controversial case.

 

Saksayam, 58, is the highest-ranking official to have contracted COVID-19 in Thailand. Latest reports suggest he is still receiving treatment at Buri Ram Hospital in Buri Ram province, the political stronghold of the Chidchob clan. His late father, Chai Chidchob, was first elected as a Buri Ram MP in 1969 and held onto the seat for decades, also serving as House speaker for three years. Saksayam’s elder brother, veteran former politician Newin, also remains hugely influential in the Northeast province, where he has been dubbed the “Baron of Buri Ram”.

Oddly enough in Thailand it seems prevalent to those with a healthy bank balance for some reason.

There is nothing too large which cannot be swept under the rug. Just need a bigger broom and a bigger rug.

 

I mean if you can have a convicted drug dealer in your cabinet, then having a partier is obviously not going bring down this government.

 

A moderate wind will blow the stench of this minor event away in no time.

When I first came to Bangkok some 30 odd years ago I assumed the stench was from the klongs, perhaps I was mistaken.

that's the second day the government media are publishing against him. Somebody doesn't like him and he will be chopped from the government.

probably on health grounds - post-covid complications.

once dust settles he will spring back to the PM office as and adviser and later to the ministry of interior for an independent office, Big Joke style.

 

he did lie not only his whereabouts, but also about his vax - he got only 1 jab, suppose to get a booster on the day he became sick.

I do hope he french kissed many of his fellow party members at the anniversary party.

Yeah....things were SO BAD under Thaksin weren't they.....Now, its a bed of roses.....I look back at where Thailand seemed to be heading when I came here in 2001...and look at it now. I dont really think its gotten better, to put it mildly.

As part of my job of minister of transport, of course I was there and many other nights spots while researching transport options in the city. If I am guilty of anything, anything, I am guilty of caring too much, of working too hard, of working into the night, to make sure the transport options for the people of this city is the best it can possibly be.

In the wake of the outbreak at Thong Lor pubs, Thonglor Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Duangchote Suwancharas was transferred to an inactive post. Duangchote is married to the daughter of former national police chief Pol General Patcharawat Wongsuwon.

A court also sentenced the managers of Krystal Club and the Emerald Thonglor to two months in jail for violating disease-control regulations.

 

At last! Someone has been held accountable for high ranking politicians swapping spit with the pretties.

If this is not stamped out then who knows where it will end.

It could be the thin edge of prostitution creeping into Thai society.
