Why are motorbike rentals cheap in Patong?

Standard price in Pattaya is 300/day, I see 200/day for a small bike is the norm in Patong. Just a Covid discount or always like that? If so, anyone know why?

Can you elaborate what you mean with a small bike?

For a scooter this would be expensive.

It's the rate i see for motorbikes. I assume 125-250cc range but not sure.

Well, when in Pattaya I always rent a 125ccm scooter (Honda Click or similar).

I never paid more than a 1000 Baht for a week during the years until 2019.

(I am rarely there at high/peak seasons)

Last rentals in 2020, 2021 were 700 resp. 600 Baht a week.

That of course were Covid discounts.

Even on Samui in July 2020 I paid 1000 Baht / week.

The hotel managers wife "accidentally" told me 3000 Baht / week which I politely declined.

Went to some shop on the road.

The husband later told me that his wife asked me a high season/non Covid price. Too late ????

There is a massive disparity with the prices of motorbike rentals in Thailand. I saw you could rent a Honda X-ADV 750 for 1300 per day in Phuket, while they cost 2500 in Chiang Mai! Also in Bangkok big bikes are more expensive than Chiang Mai, but in Chiang Mai bigger scooters are very expensive to rent. It's very random..

One explanation is that at those beach destinations, the renters don't really put any mileage for them just cruising around the island, while those renting from CM usually add a good 1000km or so.

Well let's try looking at it this way:
You are a motorbike rental shop and you own 20 of the 14,000 bikes for rent on the island of Phuket.
There are 18 tourists here now.
Supply and demand might give you a hint on how much you could get.
