All eyes on China’s Sinovac – Thailand’s vaccine choice for emergency

Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine is coming under greater public scrutiny as the Thai government procures millions more doses.

 

Thailand has already imported 6 million doses of the vaccine – also known as CoronaVac – from China, including 500,000 jabs donated by the Chinese government. Next month, Thailand will take delivery of another 3 million doses of the Chinese vaccine. Most Thais who have been vaccinated received CoronaVac, which will soon be administered to several million more.

 

As a result, the Thai public is keen to find out more about this inactivated vaccine.

 

How effective is CoronaVac?

Data from a clinical trial in Brazil show CoronaVac was 50.4% effective at preventing symptomatic infections overall. However, it was 78 per cent effective in preventing mild to serious cases that need hospitalisation.

And that's the key ???? Before a couple companies hit it out of the park with mRNA vaccines, anything 50% plus effective was (and still is?) the US FDA's standard for approval for a Covid-19 coronavirus vaccine.

They should not play with the double name as may dupe people into thinking it is ok. Just say it is the Chinese vaccine Sinovac and let everyone decide if they want to jab. It should not be forced on anyone unsure or unwilling. AZ apparently is not the best for people under 60 and some state under 30. So what real choice do the people really have if they do not want the Chinese one and it is recommended for safety to not jab with the Thai made one under a certain age? Stop the games and smoke and mirrors and plainly expedite all other vaccine like the real winners being Pfizer and Moderna. The last two are me and my family's choice as well so so many others I have heard from and read for their choice. We all have the right for what to jab with and whom that supports and the right to block what we don't want and the what we don't support.

why take it if only 50% effective, currently anybody with good immune system  has 50/50 %  (or more) chances of getting infected if getting the Chinese vax still have the same 50/50 % chances, why get it

The often quoted 50% is for those with mild infections - which you could just recover from at home. It is more effective against serious infections, and should heelp you out of the crematorium. This is the way most vaccines work. 

What we don't know for sinovac is how long the antibody titre stays high, and when another booster shot may be needed.

I called it. Very probable they conspired with China to ensure only Sinovac was available in Thailand for some time.

There are other reports too. Not questioning the numbers, but looking at the complexities of a comparioson. It is from late March and been posted before:

That has been my thinking as well, take what you can get and pay for a Moderna or Pfizer later. But... experts seem to be having doubts about mixing vaccines now. I'll be wanting confirmation that the practice is safe before I mix and match.

I'd take the Sinovac right now as it gives some protection and would ease domestic travel, if not overseas. Then I'd wait for better shots to become available from the private sector.

I'm wondering what the Chinese haters would say if instead Sinovac, not AZ was selected by a certain company to manufacture exclusively, without much competition the vaccines for most of the Thais. Imagine the sizes of the brown envelopes discussed.

 

In other news from the FT's interview with the AZ CEO:

 

"But the plan had been disrupted by “bad luck” and “people misunderstanding things”, he claimed. Now back in AstraZeneca’s Cambridge office, after running the company via Zoom from Australia for many months, he said the attacks it had received had been “traumatic”."

 

Hiding in Australia, where there is no covid, and running a multi-billion company remotely via Zoom doesn't inspire much confidence.

Gao <deleted>, head of the Chinese Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, on Saturday said at a conference the current vaccines "don't have very high rates of protection".

 

(But hopefully, it was all a misunderstanding....)

 

He added that his earlier admission that Chinese vaccines had a low protection rate were a "complete misunderstanding".

Thanks, I saw that video earlier, and attach a link below which goes further into the efficacy of the Pfizer, Moderna and J&J vaccines, in the trials and some updated reports.

 

At the end of the day it is impressive to see how far these vaccines protect you from the critical care side of things, which at the end of the day is what we all want.

 

This Dr also discussed clotting events and other side effects which we should all be wanting to know. What was my take away from all of this, was that J&J is my take home jab if available before the others as it's a one dose vaccine and within 28 days I will have the protection required as opposed to waiting for another shot with 50% efficacy after 14 days and then the balance after the next shot, just my take on it.

It would be a good idea to check the efficacity of Sinovac as each new variant emerges. Then people who were vaccinated with it could know whether they should get a booster of something else.

Yes, that's the same correct logic that had NHS advising young people to get Pfizer instead of AZ, due to the clotting complication from AZ.

Yes, there should be trials, and they should get on with it ASAP. Give the public more options! I will ask my friend who has created many viral vaccines. People may be needing boosters sooner rather than later, and those who had AZ, J&J, will probably need boosters by another type of vaccine.
