Reminder: Alcohol sales banned in Thailand today

Sales of alcoholic beverages are banned in Thailand today (May 26) for Visakha Bucha Day, one of the most significant days in the Buddhist calendar.

 

While bars are closed and restaurants prohibited from serving alcohol due to COVID-19, today’s ban also applies to alcohol sold in supermarkets or convenience stores.

 

Anyone found violating the alcohol ban could face up to six months in jail and/or a fine of 10,000 baht.

 

The holiday also sees all government offices and banks closed.

 

People celebrating Visakha Bucha Day have been urged to ensure they strictly follow COVID-19 preventative measures, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, regular hand washing  and using alcohol gel. Where possible, people are asked to make merit at home.

It is probably more important that the Thai people themselves do not perform the usual rituals, which involve congregating at the temples, than a few farangs not being able to buy a bottles of Archa Beer at the 7-11 to drink on the beach against those rules.

Does this ban affect Thailand’s trendy and popular “Chemsex” parties? After all, it would be a shame if all those wild and crazy party animals at Government House….have to waste a whole day off.

There was some suggestion of Thais not attending temples and that rituals will be shown on TV. My Mrs has said she is not going to the temple this year, but I have no idea how widespread that sentiment is.... many probably think they need to put one more amulet on!

Went to the corner of the nearby Soi to buy flowers for the small temple in front of the condominium and for inside the unit, the lady selling the M-150 bottles full of Lao Kow was doing a booming business as well as the small family market.  Holidays like this do not matter to the local Thai's they drink everyday and buy everyday regardless.  Silly to ban alcohol sales as it only disenfranchises a few.  The smart ones also stock up like the expats.

I forgot to grab beers yesterday, was at my local mom and pop store earlier to buy a tray of eggs for breakfast, asked If I could buy a box on the sly... was refused.

Meh there's a few bottles of scotch in the cupboard anyways so grabbed a bag of ice, paid up and came home.

 

An hour ago Fortuner stopped out front of my house, it was the shop owners Son.

 

He gave me a box of beer and told me to pay tomorrow..... he must have had about 20 boxes in the back !

It is a wonderful morning, out by the pool cooking breakfast on the BBQ with a nice cold Leo 8 in hand.

Never does, does it.  I remember living in the village once upon a time way out in Wang Sam Mo.  Ah the drunken fights which would occur on the holidays and the loud screaming until late at night of couples fighting, fond memories.....

So now we have a Buddhist alcohol ban on top of the existing Covid Alcohol ban.

 

Frankly, I think this is insufficient. I hope Prayut adds a third nonsensical reason to ban alcohol, on top of the existing two in order to maintain existing levels of sanctimony.

My point is that we are not children. Neither are many of us Buddhists. Banning things in the name of one particular religion is not really an intelligent way to run a country in the 21st century.

 

The running of the bulls in Pamplona also happens every year. Just because something happens every year doesn't make it correct. That's incredibly simplistic thinking.
