Thai cops lose 28 AK assault rifles in troubled south - could be more

Thailand's chief of police General Suwat Chaengyodsuk has been informed in an urgent letter that 28 AK-102 assault rifles have gone missing from an armoury.

 

The high powered weapons were taken on May 18th from the Volunteer Defense Corps that supports the armed forces. 

 

It happened in Muang district of Narathiwat in Thailand's far south and troubled border area. 

 

Next day local officials went to formally complain about the guns going missing.

 

Thai Rath, quoting sources, said that provincial commander Maj-Gen Narin Busaman is also aware that yet more weapons have been stolen from Rueso, Si Sakhon and Su-ngai Padi districts. 

 

Investigations are underway.

What is the penalty for a soldier here if they misplace a weapon?  Are they assigned individual weapons, serial numbers recorded against the soldier etc?

I had a SLR-95 in the USA that looks a lot like the photo. amazing weapon.  sold it for twice what paid for it. 

 

I would take with me grocery shopping in case anyone wanted to argue over a parking space.

This has been how the southern insurgents have armed themselves the last twenty years. The Thai army and particularly the Volunteer Defense Corps have failed to learn any lessons from past experience. It seems to be akin to taking candy from a baby.

I could understand it if they were in a disabled  bay but surely  just a good  beating with a baseball  bat would  be enough for the minor parking space  issue.

Sounds like there should be some serious sackings and imprisonments of high officials and generals etc for gross negligence to me.

Could happen to anyone. People mislay stuff. It seems like every day I go outside, look in the driveway and wonder where all of my tanks, APCs and bazookas have gone.

Maybe its a 10 year inventory check that found the missing guns. About 10 years ago the same thing happened in Nong Khai.

They are high powered compared to a pistol.  Less powerful than an M16 or AR15 but uses a heavier bullet that compensates. I would not want to use one of these as a sniper rifle to pick off targets at 800 meters but for what they are designed for, close combat up to about 150 metres, they are deadly.

 

The government can easily source  cheap 7.62×39mm AK ammo from Eastern Europe, China, N. Korea, S. Korea.  There is lots of it around. 

 

They used to arm these volunteers only with pump action shotguns for close quarters self defense,  which are less likely to cause collateral damage or to be used effectively against them, if stolen.  Now they have provided insurgents with perfect weapons for ambushing police and military from the side of the road.

There were cases in the past where the local defence volunteers were given a choice: either leave the weapons unguarded and unlocked or we'll kill you and your family members to get them.  But those were shotguns that were good for shooting policemen off their motor bikes.  These will be good for ambushing army trucks and assaulting police stations. Can get more ammo from over the border in Cambodia too.

 

They got about 400 M16s from a big raid on an army camp about 10 years ago when most of the troops had been allowed on leave for Songkran.  A few were recovered but they still have most of them.

Weapons such as this do not just go "missing " from an Armoury.

This is either a case of gross Incompetence, though I doubt it as so many more District Armouries' seem to be " missing " there AK 47 Rifles as well.

Or somebody has switched sides, probably for Money.
