The first 1.8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine made in Thailand are “ready to be gradually rolled out,” AstraZeneca said in a statement Wednesday.

“Now that we are ready to deliver high-quality vaccine produced locally, we can help the Thai government achieve its goal,” said James Teague, country president of AstraZeneca Thailand.

Health Minister Anutin Charvirakul said earlier Wednesday that 1.1 million AstraZeneca and Sinovac jabs had been deployed to provinces as of Tuesday, as preparation for the nationwide roll-out for people aged between 18 and 59 that is scheduled for June 7.

Roll out to begin on 7 June 2021 for 18 to 59 year olds.  Sounds to me that they will be getting Sinovac albeit this report is about the delivery of AstraZeneca.     Couldn't be that the Minister is being disengenious, could it? Nah he's a politcian and poilticians don't tell porkies, particulaly Thai politicians, do they?

What about all us over 60s still waiting?

Sinovac.

WHO approval removed any upper age limits.

“We have made a contract with AstraZeneca, therefore, no matter where the vaccines are coming from, they are still AstraZeneca’s vaccines,” he said.

“There are the ones that are being made in Thailand and some that are imported from abroad, depending on AstraZeneca’s supply chain,” he added.

Suitably, and oddly, vague, with a dash of confusion.

Strange he can't just say where these 590,000 AZ doses came from? One would think he has this kind  information.

Still seems like something is hinky here.

Yeah, saw that.

Meanwhile much of the planet is limiting Az to the older people.

How lucky we are to be living in Thailand.

With 90%+ plus of infections here being the highly contagious UK Alpha B117 English mutant strain I hope it is effective and remains effective against it.

Our embassies won't care for us. Thank Christ for the Thais.

Perhaps they could send some to Australia. We don't have enough there and are in the fourth lockdown that has just been extended by at least another week.

Finally we have a light at the end of the tunnel now.

It has already been reported that some 500,000 Doses of AZ Vaccine have been procured from S. Korea to bolster the roll out.

Seems AZ and SB cannot meet its commitments on Vaccines ordered, with this first quantity of only 1.8 M doses of which at least 500,000 are from S. Korea. And these doses are to be rolled our gradually.

Rolled out gradually, probably means they will be delivered gradually, as and when here is some more brewed.

And lets not forget the commitment AZ / SB have to the other nations in SE Asia, as they have already reneged a delivery to the Philippines.

Not looking good thus far.

There is something confusing here, because the Sinovac was just given clearance for use in people over 60. And I thought the AZ was already in use for over 60. So why are they removing over 60s from the vaccination program?

US to the rescue!

Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman made the promise in her meeting with Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha during her visit to Thailand.

Mrs Sherman said the US intended to supply COVID-19 vaccines to countries to help them get through the pandemic and thus it was ready to offer Thailand’s access to the vaccines.

I think the reporter got this all screwed up. As I recall, Thailand was restricting 60's and up from getting Sinovac. Not AZ.

Recently read that Thailand had 62 cases of Indian B. 1617.2 in one area. In the space of about 5 weeks is now about 80% of new cases in the UK. Rarely mentioned here though. No patient data yet but lab estimates a much greater ability to evade vaccines.

AstraZeneca commits to 1.8 million Thai vaccine doses amid supply anxiety

By Patpicha Tanakasempipat

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Drugmaker AstraZeneca said on Wednesday it would soon provide Thailand with 1.8 million doses of locally manufactured COVID-19 vaccine, the first of multiple batches this month, just days out from the launch of its mass vaccination drive.

The announcement in a joint statement by AstraZeneca and Siam Bioscience, a firm owned by Thailand's king, comes amid public anxiety about vaccine supplies, as the country suffers its most severe outbreak so far.

The statement did not say whether the Thai plant would make all 6 million doses that Thailand's government has promised would be available this month.

The government's immunisation drive starts on Monday and relies almost entirely on its reserved 61 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, the majority of which it said would come from Siam Bioscience, which is making vaccines for the first time.

Questions about Siam Bioscience meeting production targets are sensitive because King Maha Vajiralongkorn is its sole owner. Insulting Thailand's monarchy is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

AstraZeneca has partnered with the Thai firm for the manufacture of 200 million doses for use in Southeast Asia, a region with low COVID-19 immunisation rates that is seeing a strong resurgence of the virus.

Thai health minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday the promised 6 million doses would come this month "as planned", but did not specify delivery dates or how many would be sourced locally.

"We will get AstraZeneca vaccine. It may come from wherever, but all AstraZeneca just the same. It could be made in Thailand or imported from overseas. It depends on AstraZeneca's supply chain," Anutin told reporters.

Siam Bioscience has not answered queries from Reuters on its production targets.

AstraZeneca said 1.8 million locally produced doses would be delivered by Monday, the first of multiple deliveries this month.

It said deliveries of Thai-made doses to other Southeast Asian countries would start in July.

The first delivery to the Philippines, which was promised 17 million doses, was cut from 1.3 to 1.17 million doses and delayed from late June to mid-July, a Philippine presidential advisor told Reuters on Tuesday, citing Thai production delays.
