There is another solution:

Switch off your PC. Then bang your hand against a side. Then switch it on again.

If you are lucky all will work again. The reason is that this "fixes" lose connections.

My neighbor, the flight engineer, told me on planes they call it "technical tap". Really!

Is it possible that after 7 years the BIOS battery is playing up?  That's easy to fix.

It appears he has already had it checked and HDD is indeed bad - await his reaction to the new SSD experience - but hope he has not lost anything important.

Even with a dead BIOS battery the computer will detect the drives.

Actually windows 10 is not the bogey man it once was. It does take a bit of getting used too but since the (many) updates have been released the operating system has become stable and secure.

A wise man once told me never get the latest release of windows. Always wait until at least two service packs have been released for it. Then jump on board.

It is clear that you misunderstood what I wrote. I mean the OP should install Windows 10 themselves; as opposed to letting someone in a shop do it for him.

Did you follow the thread. The computer does not recognize any boot device. What you describe happens after the computer found a boot device.

I certainly did follow the thread. My questions were to help me understand the ailing PC.

I guess each person has his/her own methods of diagnosing issues...

Good to hear the OP found a solution and hope he didn't lose any data.

All's well that ends well ????

If his HDD is kaput, and he has not backed up his data anywhere, USB drive or cloud, it is probably gone.

Depends how 'kaput' the HDD is.

Maybe data in partition D can still be accessed with SATA to usb cable.

Doubtful if the bios did not even recognise the drive  which means the control board is probably  dead.. I had such a drive  but it was resurrected by  a company specialising in repairing the driver boards  only had to send them the board itself not the whole hard drive   lost no data at all  which was good because it had lots of stuff collected for many years  which foolishly I had not backed up  (now backed up x 3)

Back up and running, and a little quicker with the SSD.

Most important stuff saved in the cloud so no real losses, in fact cleaner and crispier. ????

You will mostly see the speed on startup and windows updates - but there will be better speeds for any read/write operations so should be much more comfortable to use and almost no waits.  Glad you had cloud storage.

Interesting. How much did you pay and how long did it take?

And do you have a website of the company you used?

The following won't help anybody restoring data. But if you are interested how hard disks look inside have a look at this video.

Dave is a brilliant electrical engineer.

(price at 2015) 50 USD + a tiny bit of postage from Thailand to Canada return postage included original HDD board included along with the new board,  from what I understand what they do is transplant some microchip/s from  the broken board to a new board  the chip contains  the FAT ( perhaps not FAT but a master dictionary ? ) from the original drive so  just install the new board and everything is "magically" there

https://onepcbsolution.com/

It did take a bit longer than I thought  more than a month  I suppose not too bad considering the distances involved.
