Phuket sandbox could be closed if there is a widespread outbreak

A widespread Covid outbreak in Phuket could mean the cancellation of the Sandbox scheme, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Tuesday.

In the past 24 hours, Phuket reported four cases, and it has reported less than 10 cases per day since May 16.

“If there are more than 90 cases per week, Phuket will be closed. But different levels of measures will also be implemented before the decision for ultimate closure,” said Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, the CCSA’s spokesman.

If Phuket is already recording about 40 cases per week, then they are saying that they would close the sandbox if there are an additional 50 cases. Even if there would be zero actual infections brought in by the additional domestic and international travelers, you could get an additional 50 "cases" by only bringing in 4,000 sandbox players each week. This is because PCR tests are reported to have a false positive at the rate of 0.5%. Since each sandboxer has to take three such tests, then there is a 1.5% chance of each traveler getting a false positive, being recorded as a case, and then being carted off for a 14-day stay in a local hospital.

Agreed... there is just so much hot air, announcements, confirmations, u-turns, further announcements....

... the original proposal is all but unrecognisable now.

Its pointless commenting any more... it will change more or get cancelled completely.

If it happens it happens...  I don’t think anyone with any sense returning to Thailand (i.e. for family purposes etc) will book anything until the last minute.... they may then enjoy a less restricted ASQ in Phuket - thats about it.

A tourist would be foolish to book anything in advance at the moment unless it was fully refundable for any reason.

To risky ,numbers excalating through - out Thailand. We dont see all the info. Just heard about 100 staff infected in Chiang Rai General Hospital. How many are really infected in Phuket. Althogh anxious to return home I will not take the risk for a couple of months at least. See how they travel. I wish all the best of luck.

I hope they are making those booking trips aware of that!

90 is nothing!

I heard the other day that 2 markets have to close for a week in Rawai, I have no other info as to why,

I drive bye them everyday and the one which is Tuesday market was closed,

The one that opens on a Wednesday I will see today,

Strange because they have never closed all through the pandemic,

Something they are not telling us...........>

You should  of read past the first sentence. .

Well at least they have their excuse ready when it falls flat on its face !
Be it truth or not ????????

Easy. Restrict testing to 10 per day = 70 per week, which is < 90

"Phuket sandbox will be closed when there is a widespread outbreak"

I fixed the title to be more accurate

I wonder how many are going home? I know of 2 people leaving Thursday

Well, people are sure to invest thousands of pounds on flights and hotels now that they know the whole ill conceived idea will be cancelled at a moment's notice if there are over 90 cases per week ????.

Lower the cycle count of the PCR tests to 20 and Bob's your uncle.
"Look Ma - no cases!"

Not very encouraging for someone applying for leave and booking hotels and airlines. Better go somewhere else.
