The End Cigarette Smoke Thailand group (ECST) and admins of the “What is an e-cigarette?” Facebook page spoke to the media this week about what they view as incorrect statements made by an anti-smoking activist, who said a new study shows that e-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine and are just as harmful to health as combustible cigarettes while stating that the government has the right to ban e-cigarettes in order to protect the public’s health and regulate harmful goods.

 

 “A study by researchers at the University of California in the U.S. cited by Dr. Ruengruedee Pathavanich of Ramathibodi Hospital was a trial conducted in eight lab rats and the results were measured within five minutes to see the levels of nicotine that the rats had received from the vapor from e-cigarettes.

 

The results show the vapor produced by one brand of e-cigarettes contained 5-8 times more nicotine than cigarettes. However, The amount used in the trial does not reflect the use of e-cigarettes in real life and contradicts with the report by the British Heart and Cardiovascular Disease Association citing a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which studied the cardiovascular effects of switching from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes in smokers.

 

The study by the British Heart and Cardiovascular Disease Association found that smokers demonstrated significant improvement in vascular health after switching to e-cigarettes for one month. Moreover, experts from Oxford University also encouraged smokers to switch from cigarettes to e-cigarettes in order to reduce the risks of heart and cardiovascular diseases. The Thai doctor publicizing such misinformation can confuse smokers and the general public and create a misunderstanding, which is very irresponsible on her part,” said Asa Saligupta.

A story on here 2 years ago stated there were 10 million smokers in Thailand.

 

If they each smoked 20 a day, that's some 73,000,000,000 fag ends thrown on the floor or out the window each year.

 

Should allow e-cigs if only to stop the littering  of the environment !

Nicotine is not the problem but it's being used as an excuse and the issue is misunderstood by most people.

The problem is regular cigarettes and the products of combustion, e-cigs don't have these products of combustion due to the complete lack of combustion in an e-cig.

 

There's nicotine in it - so what?

Nicotine is not the issue. Its the other chemicals contained in cigarette smoke that is the problem.

spot on. This is exactly what numerous studies have shown; it is the inhalation of  a burnt substance that is the cause of the associated health issues. e cigarettes do not burn anything.

     There are understandable concerns about children being introduced to e cigarettes (and ultimately to smoking ) because of the use of child friendly flavors, but the real motivation behind the ban is the likely loss of tax revenue.

But we were reliably told none resided in family friendly Pattaya.

There is only one reason why E cigs are banned in Thailand and its got <deleted>A to do with ones health.

Vapers is dangerous and addictive.

True; but its a rare and treatable condition unlike cigarette  smoking .

Having said that vaping is probably not the long term solution here (partly because of issues such as this). Heated e cigarettes are a preferable option for people who cannot otherwise stop. 

nothing to do with Health e cigs do not provide the Tax revenue greedy governments...e cigs not perfect but a better option also perhaps an aid to stopping smoking ..God forbid government would lose billions..

You see the problem with that statement is that properly made liquids don't contain lipids - because it's well known they can cause lipoid pneumonia.

 

so how did this happen ? What we had in the US was people adding things to liquids that should never be inhaled, because, you know - they're dumb.

 

They were making a type of cannabis based vaping juice and 'cutting' the expensive pure and refined oil with 'vitamin E acetate' - a poison that can cause lipoid pneumonia when inhaled.

 

So the Vit E acetate was the problem that caused the normally quite rare lipoid pneumonia.

Bold type above is a concern when looking for safe liquids ( many liquids come from Chinese back street unregulated makers ) in Thailand .  I do know of vapers who somehow manage to bring liquids from recognised European manufacturers . I have seen Thai folk openly vaping in public and police are not concerned but if its a farang he is susceptible to a big fine . Vape kits were once available online in Thailand but I hear that has been plugged .  

  Maybe a licence to vape could be the answer ?
