Foreigner flummoxed by Thai driving standards - puts clip online

Daily News picked up on a ten second selfie clip posted on Jay Moi V Plus by a foreign man on a bike at an intersection.

 

They said he was confused by Thai driving. 

 

The man, with what seemed like an American accent was heard to talk about "truck drivers who think they're bikes".

 

He was referring to a pick-up that had gone past the zebra crossing front line as bikes are sometimes allowed to do.

 

It mentioned that Thailand had him "triggrered" (sic).

 

Poster Rattakit Rabob probably said it best:

 

"Welcome to Thailand". 

 

ASEAN Now notes that its own forums and others are full of criticism of Thai driving standards. This one will probably be filed under "everyday occurrence - get on with your life".

Flummoxed,  I learned a new word today.

The truck driver was probably desperate to to run the lights and then decided at the very last moment that they weren't going to make it and had to slam on the brakes. 

 

Nothing new here, in fact very common.

This guy needs to chill. I could fill an SD card with 'confusing' Thai driving on every trip to Tesco Lotus.

Given that he actually stopped at a red light, I'd say this is one of the better examples of Thai driving standards.

Its not as if Thais are  bad drivers, it just that its taking them  several generations to  convert from  riding on a buffalo to  riding a motor cycle or driving a vehicle.

I can tell that from what i have been and seen in other countries around the world, Thai drivers are not the worst, infect, i find driving on Thai roads fairly safe most of the time with no hassle or road rage display like you see in other countries...

For over 20 years on the streets of Thailand, I would estimate that I have saved around 500 lives through my defensive driving style. Never trust a green traffic light, no frantic maneuvers if someone is approaching on the wrong side of the lane, do not think that the indicator here shows the actual direction of travel, at night scan regulary the street with a short high beam for vehicles without lighting, be particularly careful with all U-turns, always expect the Thais to turn into a main road without looking. Thailand is still the number 2 in traffic deaths worldwide. I wish everyone an accident-free journey

Discombobulated or not, flummoxed I was when I read the word, but, I was able to guess its meaning from context. A little perplexed at what is so baffling about that.

I once seen a 10 wheel truck run over a motorcycle with two people sitting on it stopped at a red light. The funny thing was that it was in the middle of a sunny afternoon and the truck had previously stopped behind the motorcycle. Hilarious!
