Thailand reports 8,656 new COVID-19 cases, 80 more deaths

Thailand on Monday (July 12) reported 8,656 new COVID-19 cases and 80 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 
 

● 8,583 new infections

● 73 prison / prison infections
 

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 345,027 with 2,791 deaths.
 

(Total infections since April 1: 316,164)
 

The news comes as 880 medical personnel, about 54% of them nurses and assistant nurses, were infected with COVID-19 between April 1st and July 10th, and of these, seven have died, according to Dr. Sophon Iamsirsithavorn, deputy director-general of Disease Control Department.

8,656 positive cases today with 73 of those from prisons, 80 more deaths. Thailand in crisis, ICU's and critical bed shortage at record levels and no end in sight yet to this increasing spread of the virus. Just about everyone here must now be hoping that the measures in place will start to kick in soon but the reality is that looking at other countries ravaged by delta this is going to be a very long and painful haul back to normality.

Probably an artifact of low processing over the weekend. We’ll know if the positive cases from field testing is much below 2300 cases. If the number of such cases is around 1,000, the number should be much higher tomorrow.

The relentless rise in new COVID cases in Thailand eased slightly on Monday with 8,656 new cases and 80 deaths reported, ending a five-day streak of record-setting new case increases and marking the second day in a row of declining deaths.

 

The slight improvement in daily results, which reflected cases and death numbers tallied on Sunday, came ahead of new COVID restrictions taking effect today in Bangkok and nine other hard-hit provinces including an overnight 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew, and various business closures in Bangkok and five adjoining provinces.

 

Before Monday, Thailand had recorded three consecutive days of 9,000+ new COVID cases, setting its pandemic single day record high of 9,539 just yesterday. Monday’s 8,656 new case tally was the fourth highest on record. The 80 new deaths was the country’s third highest daily COVID death toll on record.

 

Monday’s results, with the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus spreading throughout Thailand, meant the country got at least a brief reprieve from predictions that it will soon surpass 10,000 new COVID cases and 100 COVID deaths per day.

 

Monday’s update included 8,583 new cases in the general population and 73 cases coming from prisons. Since the start of the pandemic, Thailand has now recorded 345,027 total COVID cases and 2,791 deaths, although some Thai doctors say the real figures, especially for cases, are likely much higher.

 

Because of the rapid rise in new COVID cases in Thailand, the country as of Monday was still reporting new record levels of COVID cases hospitalized (90,578), the share of those in critical condition (2,895), and the share of those requiring ventilators to breathe (747).

 

As of Monday, Thailand's population of hospitalized COVID patients in critical condition had increased daily for 23 days in a row. The share of those requiring ventilators to breathe had increased for seven days in a row.

 

 

To comply with the curfew, all BTS and MRT rail line services will close daily at 9 p.m., as will local BMTA bus services. Interprovincial bus services have been halted to southern provinces, and reduced to north and northeastern provinces.

Now as the D'Man would say, this may truly just be an Artifact from a slowing in weekend testing, yet the deaths are still up there.  Just saw a funeral being shown on Channel 16 for I would guess one of the fireman, no one in attendance except for a government official, the men in PPE's and two fireman with hoses spraying into the air, while a cameraman films the event.  They have been at least filming the ceremonies so that family, who can not attend for obvious reasons at least have a keepsake of the somber occasion.

Anecdotal evidence on a Facebook post showing a young man checking on his sick mother at home only to find she is now deceased, sick and went to bed double masked at home because no bed could be found.  Sad reality as this I fear will become all to common as we move on.

NEW HIGH: Chonburi Public Health Office has just announced they have 399 new cases and two more deaths. Most new cases are in Chonburi City (86), Bang Lamung/Pattaya (113), and Si Racha (107). The total cases so far is now 12,031 with 4,045 remaining in care #Thailand

I think the provinces will all see new daily highs after the exodus from deep red zones. 10,000 will be reached this wk. If the numbers keep going down I would be very suspicious.

NUmber could be lower, because the government has announced that private hospitals who test patients, have to take care of the patients themselves and not anymore for the cost of the Government. Several hospitals stopped testing therefore. It was announced last week.

The government has started doing Rapid Antigen testing at three locations today with a fourth on Wednesday. Today they expect to process 1,000 tests per location (results in 30 minutes) but this will be increased to 10,000 tests per day for the four locations ( Nation Photo)

Its a Monday, it always falls because not so much testing on Sunday.  Lets see the numbers in the next two days

Following the televised briefing on Sunday 11/7 by Chief of Defense, here is the hotline numbers to report leads on violation of the curfew and measures announced, incldg any complaints on enforcement by authorities. The Armed Forces are also strictly monitoring border areas.

I watched Bangkok plates over the weekend people going into 7-11, massage shops, restaurants.

Then there is packed Tree Town with not one person wearing a mask.

Not surprising it is rising.

That will be an added 30,000 tests to their current 65,000 - 70,000 max PCR tests. Not much, considering how many PCR tests are needed to treat and test active patients.

You got to be joking , it is Monday morning . I've seen posts about 1 testcenter closing , and long rows on testcenters . As long as i do not see any post countering that and numbers being in the 1000s , i disregard a few 100 drop from previous days .

Sorry, but it's too early for the restrictions to be working.  Those who tested positive yesterday would have been infected 1-2 weeks ago.

Cases have tended to be higher on Mondays because people are off work at the weekend and go to get tested.

The word you are searching for is “artifact”, as in “the low numbers on Mondays or Tuesdays are an artifact - due to the prior weekend”.

 

As I have posted whenever there is a big drop in reported cases on a Monday or Tuesday.

Unless hospitals max out capacity, we will hit 10,000 cases this week. Today’s lower numbers are probably just an artifact from low processing yesterday.

I don’t think the people who think that the situation may deteriorate are unhappy to see cases fall. Although a one day slight decrease is totally meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
