Thailand on Tuesday (July 13) reported 8,685 new COVID-19 cases and 56 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

● 8,539 new infections

● 146 prison / prison infections

Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 353,712 with 2,847 deaths.

(Total infections since April 1: 324,849)

The news comes as Thailand will use AstraZeneca Plc's COVID-19 vaccine as a second dose for those who received Sinovac's shot as their first dose in a bid to increase protection.

For the second day in a row, the relentless rise in new COVID cases in Thailand again paused on Tuesday with 8,685 new cases and 56 deaths reported, nearly matching yesterday’s 8,656 new case total and the lowest daily death total in a week.

Tuesday’s update marked the second consecutive day of 8,000+ new COVID cases being reported, following three consecutive days of 9,000+ new case counts. The last time Thailand had a lower daily death toll than Tuesday’s 56 number was the 54 deaths reported on July 7.

The pause in COVID case increases came the day after new COVID restrictions took effect on Monday in Bangkok and nine other hard-hit provinces including an overnight 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew, restrictions on interprovincial travel and various business closures in Bangkok and five adjoining provinces.

Even with the pause, Tuesday’s 8,685 new case tally was the fourth highest on record. The 56 new deaths reported came three days after Thailand reported its all-time daily high of COVID deaths at 91 on July 10, and then had two consecutive days of death counts in the 80s.

Tuesday’s results, with the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus still spreading throughout Thailand, meant the country continued to get a reprieve from predictions that it will soon surpass 10,000 new COVID cases and 100 COVID deaths per day.

Tuesday’s update included 8,539 new cases in the general population and 146 cases coming from prisons. Since the start of the pandemic, Thailand has now recorded 353,712 total COVID cases and 2,847 deaths, although some Thai doctors say the real figures, especially for cases, are likely much higher.

Because of the rapid rise in new COVID cases in Thailand, the country as of Tuesday was still reporting new record high levels of COVID cases hospitalized (95,410), the share of those in critical condition (3,042), and the share of those requiring ventilators to breathe (794).

The number of COVID patients hospitalized in critical condition passed the 3,000 threshold for the first time Tuesday. All the above figures -- hospitalizations, critical condition and ventilators -- have doubled in the past two to three+ weeks.

As of Tuesday, Thailand's population of hospitalized COVID patients in critical condition had increased daily for 24 days in a row. The share of those requiring ventilators to breathe had increased for eight days in a row.

Remarkable similarity to yesterdays figures of 8,656!

8,685 positive cases today with 146 of those from prisons, 56 more deaths.

With the news that Chonburi is putting in place its own semi lockdown and soft curfew its only a matter of time before other provincial governors follow suit and take action rather than waiting for this inept government.

Rolling 7 day average (up to 11th July only) which includes prison cases and bar chart of community cases.

Are these numbers of infections due to the weekend testing, lack of processing or a lack of testing due to hospital facilities and those of field hospitals and Hospitels being overwhelmed already and therefore the testing has been reduced.  The number of deaths shows that many are fighting to stay alive, but then are these from just inside facilities, and not from in private residences as anecdotal evidence, the news, and Facebook stories, being posted show folks dying at home as well.  Only time can tell.  Found out that the lady transported last night had been isolating for 4 days before a bed was found.  Juristic notices have been posted around the building, the pool closed again as well as the gym, and the cleaning crews spraying all of the hallways, and stairwells again.

These guys are not impressed with Thailand's fight against the COVID. Likely don't believe their numbers either.

On this COVID recovery index Thailand ranks 119 of 121 countries. Can't get much worse than that. All neighbouring countries doing better.

8,685 more infections & 56 more deaths. Only 3,797 recovered so nearly 5,000 more patients to care for. How long the system can take 4,000 to 5,000 additional patients per day before collapsing?

Beds are at an all-time premium now as space is limited, and as I showed along with @anchadian yesterday makeshift facilities with tents being set up for patients awaiting a place to be sent.

The sad reality is I do not believe the numbers reported are accurate as testing is being limited.  I wonder how much favipiravir they have to send home with folks they want out of the hospitals and to isolate at home for 14 days until they test them again.

Have you ever considered that they have run out of testing kits or they just don't test enough or they don't tell the truth.

Not sure how accurate the testing figures are, whether they include repeat test, regardless this is a data point to show the alarming increase in positivity rate throughout Thailand which is now currently at 12.04%

In the past 30 days, Thailand has conducted on average 63,661 Covid tests per day, with average 7.65% positive rate. The infection rates (red line in the graph) have been climbing from 4.4% to 12%. In the last 7 day, one in 10 people tested positive.

Wonder if this will prove to be because the numbers in Bangkok continue to moderate, while the numbers in (most of) the rest of the country continue to worsen.

No, that was me, and I am not a doom monger. I was thinking the reduction was due to a backlog, but it was not: the reduction is due to hospital capacity issues.

If we look to be more optimistic Thailand is not the country where there is more contamination, many countries are in the worst position.

The numbers in Bangkok are moderating because of lack of hospital beds.

Is the decline in the death count anything to be positive about?  I had assumed death rates would rise, reflecting the increase in infection rates 2-3 weeks earlier.  Do you think we can expect to see the fatality rate continue to decline, or is it just blip, and rates will rise again, due to the very high number of infections in recent days?

Your post does not explain the drop over the last two days.

Very true, but we are here in Thailand and discussing Thailand as it pertains to the handling and what is going on in real time.  Life is tenuous at best in many places, while now here we are in a semi-lockdown in BKK and 9 other locations with more provincial governors soon to follow like the Chonburi Governor just did.  As cases rise in the outer lying provinces I am sure we will see the follow on effect.

Due to the fact many escaped Bangkok to the provinces prior to the lockdown coming into effect?

The Guru says that hospitals in Bangkok are running out of beds, which limits admissions which limits case numbers.

Note that positive lab tests outside of hospitals are at an all time high.

Could be a blip, or they have moved to a different regime of treatment in the ICU's that may be more effective at treating the virus infection they are fighting with.  Maybe they learned something from India and other locales that is useful, one can only hope so,

Not clear why.  Maybe sick people are being routed to hospitals in outer provinces.

Be interesting to see what the rest of the week shows nevertheless although worldometer seems to be 2 days behind on Thailand's numbers tomorrow should see Thailand in the top 60 at number 59. March and I think early april Thailand was sitting at 117. Every 'expert' is saying once the Delta variant spreads it's very difficult to control even with low numbers. With this soft lockdown daytime seems very much the same and the spread will continue. Just needs one person to take it home and it WILL spread throughout the family and beyond.

Thailand is facing a major crisis, I see little to be optimistic about at the moment.

Hope for the best, that's all we can realistically do at the moment, but it ain't looking good.
