Thailand’s vaccine director apologises for ‘slow, inadequate’ vaccine rollout, promises to join COVAX

Thailand’s National Vaccine Institute (NVI) Director Nakorn Premsri offered an apology to the public on Wednesday for the slow and insufficient national COVID-19 vaccine rollout, saying mutations of the virus were unforeseen, while promising that the country will join the COVAX program to receive donated vaccines next year.

 

“I apologise to the people that the National Vaccine Institute has not managed to procure a sufficient amount of vaccines for the unforeseen situation, although we have tried our best. The mutations (of the virus) were something that could not be predicted, which have caused a more rapid spread than last year. The vaccine procurement effort did not match the situation,” Dr. Nakorn said.

 

Thailand is in the process of joining the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access program, or COVAX, which is a worldwide initiative aimed at providing equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines directed by Gavi, or the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Thailand moves to join COVAX to address vaccine shortfall

Thailand will now join the COVAX programme, the National Vaccine Institute (NVI) said on Wednesday, after holding out from joining the international cooperation framework for months.

 

“Even though we have tried our hardest, the vaccines that we have procured so far are still not enough for the current outbreak situation,” said Dr Nakorn Premsri, the director of the NVI, adding that there had been “many agencies and many regulations involved with the procurement.”

 

To supplement current supplies, “we are looking to bring in second-generation vaccines that are effective against the mutation and we are expecting them to arrive by the first quarter of next year,” he said.

apart from the chinese vaccines you did buy - 1st generation vaccines are effective against delta you just didn't buy them AZ being the exception but 3m a month you may as well not have bothered - now you are going to have revaccinate all those that have already recieved the chinese vaccine putting the whole program back months ................................well done

when the death numbers caused by covid-19 infection returns to Zero, we will know.

how does a Doctor  feel after help causing  all these deaths that could have been avoided in someone/PEOPLE doing there job.

A simple google search entitled 'do all viruses mutate?' will quickly disprove the claim that mutations of the virus were unforeseen.

All of us have done many different jobs in the past where being 'wrong or insufficient', especially to the point where many died, resulted in dismissal or possibly imprisonment.  Why should he be given a second chance?
