Roads blocked as 1,000 employees implore factory to shut fearing infection after nearly 400 Covid cases

Daily News reported from Bang Sao Thong district in Samut Prakarn where factory workers gathered to ask to be laid off on pay for 14 days.

 

The company - not named by the media - has reported 387 cases of Covid-19 among its 3,800 employees. These have been told to quarantine at home with one section leader claiming they have no money and no food. 

 

There are reports that one of the employees has died. 

 

Around 1,000 workers gathered inside and outside the factory calling for it to be shut and the workers to be sent home on full pay for 14 days before starting again. 

 

They fear being infected at work if they continue and claimed that the company had only done some spraying. 

 

An official of the company came out to ask the employees protesting to go home and some complied but their buses were blocked from leaving by other protesters.

 

Local government officials called for arbitration to settle the issue.

i understand their feelings, don't want to go to work because of the risk, don't want to stay home, because they have no money, the government really need to step up and give some of the money to help the poor

Amazing Thailand...business as usual spreading covid in the factory and then exporting it on the product and packaging of items to then infect the unknowing general public. Stick those facts in the sandbox model and see who still wants to come here.

Well we dont know the whole story....this factory could be producing essential items neccesary for the new space program.  Priorities first, let them eat cake!

The docile are very very far from exploding. Life for the Thai improved massively over the last 5 decades, and keeps improving. Yes, the wealth is distributed extremely unfair and uneven. And yes, the improvements go much slower then it could be. But there wont be any exploding whatsoever. For that most Thai see too much positive perspective.

it's really a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't.   They need their job, they need the money,   but they don't need to work near Covid infected employees.  

The company management has alot to answer for .....  very badly managed as it ' will cost us money '

Mrs told me today about two smallish factories down the road, 80 positive in one and 40 in the other with the local wat doing 20 cremations this weekend. Also Samut prakan.

Sure. But the company owners has primary responsibility for the safety & health of their workers. That includes paying them to home quarantine.

As well as the little thing that people don't like being disenfranchised. Their chosen leaders keep being sent into exile or disbarred from politics because they don't bow to the army/families. The rice bowl maybe full but the feeling of being a pet animal that needs to know its place is one many will resent on principle.

Because the rich Chinese Thais control the factories and industry and have their hands and arms firmly up the rear end of Pinocchio and the other puppets who dance to their tune.

 

How is it that so many migrant workers who are caught illegally crossing the borders have paid for jobs in Thailand but without fail the factories or building projects who have offered them work are never ever named and shamed.

Up here in Issan there not very fond of the government.  It will be interesting how the next protests turn out.

Difficult and almost impossible with families and business here.

 

Hopefully get vaccinated sooner than later.  I've reserved and pre-paid for Moderna.  Unfortunately it looks like the government has already grabbed a few million.

 

Otherwise were staying close to home and avoiding crowds as much as possible.
