Provocative title.  But this time last year when Thailand was doing OK there were numerous posters (a majority?)  saying the government was obviously lying, deaths are higher, the figures couldn't be right, it is all lies to save face.  But we pointed out the hospitals weren't overwhelmed, nobody knew anyone who had Covid (anecdotally), but no, it must be lies.  Fair enough, the government does lie about stuff.  So many people crying it was an obvious cover up.

Now that Thailand is reporting rampant figures - up there with the worst in the world - each day escalating to set new records of infections and deaths, hospitals genuinely overrun, I would love to hear from those posters who were so adamant Thailand was covering up..........why aren't they just covering this up and saying there are 1,000 cases per day.  Should be easy, right?  Just like they were doing before.

If we were covering up then, why aren't we covering up now?  Genuinely curious to get some opinions on this.

This is simple to answer.

No one earlier said the numbers were fake, they were just incomplete due to lack of testing.

In fact, testing is still very low.  What is generating the higher numbers are hospital walk-ins. But that means that new reported infections are largely symptomatic individuals. If the government tested more, there would be more reported asymptomatic cases.

No no no, dozens of posters were clear that the numbers were fake.  Just curious to hear from one of them why things have changed, why we aren't still lying and saying it's fine.

There will be droves of them here soon,

stating that Covid has got so far out of hand that the Thai authorities couldn't possibly hide it any longer????

Yep, any minute now they'll be along....

I'd guess that we are also at our upper limits of how many tests we can process per day, considering how they have recently 'approved' self testing.

wouldn't be the first nation to do this, especially as countries, such as the uk, who supply reasonably accurate data get branded as plague countries by other nations.

Virtually nobody here claimed the numbers were fake, just that there wasn’t enough testing.

Anybody here for the discussion knew that the national numbers were a composite of provincial numbers, which no one usually claimed were fake.

while replacing PCR tests with the rapid one, the rapid one are not included in the statistics.

That's new ministerial order, at the bottom of page, circled red.

There was an article several days ago, that some 13% of bangkok most populated areas are already positive. That's hundreds of thousands people. And it will get worse for a month or two.

Availability of tests is very limited, need to be booked in advance, rarely walk ins. They are up to 4k baht and might be required to take several of them - that might amount to monthly wage. That deters even sick people from taking test.

As there are no spare beds anywhere, those diagnosed will be given paracetamol, herbal pills and told to get back home.

Nobody said they were fake? There have been hundreds of post screaming fake,!

In the mind of a Thai basher good news reported is 100 % fake

However if bad news is reported its 100 % true

They are sad <deleted>

To be clear, when I asked anyone who claimed the numbers were fake, they responded that the numbers were fake because there wasn’t enough testing.

no one claimed that the official figures were false, just incomplete.

Absolutely correct.  Strange that people here are saying "no-one claimed the numbers were lies".  Like you say, hundreds and hundreds of posts were claiming exactly that!  Would love to hear from just one of those posters why they aren't lying and covering up now just like they (supposedly) were then.  It would be easy, and life could go on as normal.

Perhaps we weren't covering up. Sounds like your post is just a "I told you so" one.

Gawd! Are you genuinely asking? I find those eager-to-believe the ‘facts’ put out by an autocratic regime while avoiding logic as numptified as the antivaxxer and scamdemic crowds. Regardless of that and how Thais naturally would perceive things more favourable than reality, it was always in Thailand—logic dictates that when your doors are open to the initial spread. Just because numbers reported now are higher doesn’t make any difference. The numbers are as suspect now as they have always been. As an aside, does testing a 10th to 20th the capacity of another country with subsequent figures a 10th or 20th of another country mean they have a 10th or 20th of total infections? Rhetorical. Stay in your bubble chaps.
