Popular Post Caldera
RIP to the lady and my condolences to her family and friends. Horrible news. That's a major blow to "Safe and Trusted Thailand", to have a murdered tourist on their hands after merely a month and among a group of just about 15,000 tourists in total. If all the Burmese migrant workers are "bubbled and sealed", they might actually have to arrest a Thai for this crime this time around. Hopefully they'll make a sincere effort to find the real perpetrator(s)..

In an ideal world people SHOULD be able to go anywhere they like and with whom they like , unfortunately we don't live in a ideal World and people, both Male and Female , need to be aware of those dangers and take precautions . The perpetrator will have a lifetime of worry even if they are not found. A friend of mine got pushed through a shop window and thought little of it until several years later he got charged over it after being stopped for drink driving and a DNA test was done that matched his blood on the broken glass. Fingers crossed that firstly any crucial forensic evidence has been properly detected, preserved, collected and not cross contaminated or destroyed by people entering the crime scene. DNA evidence will depend on whether or not the perpetrator/s left identifiable traces behind on/in the victim, her clothing, belongings or other objects in the established crime scene/s. That extends to any other physical evidence not of a DNA nature. In acts of extreme violence like this, the crimes are often opportunistic and the offenders' generally of low intelligence. Their considerations and knowledge of hiding evidence will probably be minimal,.So chances of DNA profiles being obtained are likely higher. I am not sure how advanced the RTP DNA database is? And I am not sure of the level of international cooperation between data sharing between Thailand and other countries. Also, I am not sure of the policies and laws in place allowing RTP to take DNA samples from offenders when they are arrested? I would assume there are laws allowing them to obtain a DNA sample from suspects of serious crimes where DNA profiles were obtained. But I wonder how far that extends to offenders charged with unrelated crimes where no DNA evidence was identified/required. If incarcerated (imprisoned) here, do prisoners provide a DNA swab as part of the prisoner registration process (like what occurs in other countries)? As Phuket at the time of the offence, contained people from numerous countries abroad, there is a chance (if the offender/s are not Thai citizens) may flee the country undetected. If no suspects are identified to compare DNA profiles and if those suspects do not have the same recorded on a Thai DNA database, then the offender/s may never be caught (if solely relying on that evidence alone. There may be other evidence gathered/to be identified) The upside is that Phuket numbers are low and the area is contained meaning a better opportunity to filter likely suspects. I hope for a swift apprehension of anyone involved. Edited August 6, 2021 by aussienam 2

Jonathan Fairfield
Thailand probes death of Swiss tourist near Phuket waterfall Image: Thairath BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand is investigating the death of a 57-year-old Swiss tourist after her body was found near a waterfall on the resort island of Phuket, with signs she had died of unnatural causes, officials said on Friday. The woman was visiting under the "Phuket Sandbox" scheme, a pilot project to allow in vaccinated foreign tourists to help revive a sector decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Phuket governor Narong Woonciew said, adding that she had arrived on the island on July 13. The woman appeared to have been dead for three days before her body was found, partially unclothed, said Kitirath Phanpetch, commander of Region 8 police that oversees Phuket, in an interview on MCOT television. Although police have not yet determined the cause of death, Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat expressed condolences to the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok in a statement that described the case as a "murder". Thailand's Phuket tourism scheme, in which vaccinated visitors can skip COVID-19 quarantine but have to remain on the island for 14 days, has faced a difficult start particularly as the rest of Thailand faces a surge in coronavirus infections. The scheme attracted about 15,000 visitors in July, its first month, just 1% of pre-pandemic arrivals "After finishing the terms of the sandbox, she travelled to (the nearby island of) Krabi and returned," Kitirath said. She stayed at a hotel in Phuket that was about two km (1.24 miles) from a waterfall where she was later found. The body was found with swelling and bruises, Kitirath said, adding that results of an autopsy would be ready later on Friday. "There was a black cloth covering the body, which suggests somebody placed it there and that the cause of death was unnatural," he said. Kitirath said police were investigating people with criminal records and also migrant workers for possible involvement in the death.
