Ive worked my way through most of the age ranges on Thaifriendly and some of the stories the ladies tell me they really do work hard to earn their money..... lots of perverts in Pattaya it seems.

One fellow in particular enjoys wearing a mask that is attached via a hose to pants worn by the lady and he sits and waits for her to pass wind.

What's her ID on there?

For those who are unaware - cruise ships did come to Pattaya before. I just read an archived article in the NY Times of cruise ship trips in 1981/82, some of which included stops at "Pattaya Beach".
The QE2 cruise that docked in Pattaya was in 1983.

Remember, there used to be a large pier that ran out into the bay, right next to where the water pumping station is (a stone's throw from the entrance to Walking Street). (Two piers it seems at one time in the 80's. I only saw 1 when I was here in the 90s though.)
That pier was demolished after Bali Hai was built.

The water was probably deeper then as there probably wasn't as much sand being dumped on the beaches and then washed out into the bay in those days.

Just last Sept, city hall approved a new "cruise ship terminal" project with the pier sticking out from the point of land past where Bali Hai is located. It's funny, because an article from last June said there was a lack of interest from marine construction companies to do such a project.

Also keep in mind that many of these projects are nothing more than "trial balloons" being floated to gauge public (and corporate) interest in such projects. If the interest is minimal, the project quietly fades into memory.
If they get a rousing response, then they can proceed onto the next step (usually allocating budget, tendering proposals and getting the necessary approvals).

The old piers in the early 80's, just before the start of what is now Walking Street

(Can't remember if we can link Bangkok Post articles here, but that's where the image came from.)

According to the multi-billion dollar plans for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), they are building a state of the art cruise ship terminal at Sattahip and improving the existing facilities in Laem Chabang.

I would call it a service then because they way you said it it looks like you call the girls a product .

Sex is the "product" or "service" being sold, is it not?

I used to go to look at the girls and bought cheap drinks so I could sit in the Lucky Star bar to do so.

One needed to be quite wealthy to consider buying sex there IMO.

Lucky Star Bar is not on Walking Street.

Perhaps my memory is not what it used to be so what is the name of the bars right across from Marine Disco. There were 3 of them with same name, and a pool hall was behind them. I think The Blues Bar was also behind them, but I might have the wrong name of that bar.

I managed to find a reasonable map of Walking Street on google images ( not actually easy ) and that map disagrees with you.

It clearly indicates Lucky Star bar across from Marine.

I was wrong about the Blues Bar. It was the Blues Factory.

Care to put a percentage on packed place to empty places on Walking Street, pre covid?

no idea i only went to places that were good and usually busy. It's like everywhere, businesses will cash burn until they eventually close. Shark agogo always amazed me how it lasted, always few customers compared to everywhere else. Walking St can be excellent if you find say 3 places you really like, who cares about the rest

A bit stubborn are we . In this case it's a service and not a product . You called them a product of their parents and now you call sex the product . Sextoys are products , sex itself is not a product . But ok let's agree to disagree .

It is me who has posted incorrectly.  Apologies.  I thought you meant the Five Star Bar on Beach Road, which is also a very old, and somewhat famous, Pattaya bar.

Thank you for apologising. Not many that misquote me or accuse me of something incorrectly have ever apologised. However, that was mainly on world news and karma got them for it when it was deleted from TVF.

I discovered there are few Lucky Star bars in Pattaya, on other sois.

No doubt a hand full of well run places were constantly busy, while the rest, as you say, burn cash.

Going to a few popular places on Walking Street, and then declaring Walking Street packed isn't accurate though, is it?

In my opinion, more places were burning cash than turning a profit.

I called sex the product, but of course it's a service, but when you go to a brothel / bar, the product or service you are purchasing is a sex act.

That said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the pretty girls get a lot more customers than others.  Is the monger not purchasing their appearance?  Is the girl not selling her beauty, which is not a service?

Yes but appearance is not a product and so isn't beauty so also not a product . But ok let's stop this and call it a draw , agree to disagree . And don't know if you seen all your so called " products" but they don't all have an appearence and beauty . And for me they are human beings not products .

Just to be clear, while a brothel sells sex, a bar rents a girl's time, and sex is not obligatory. Thai bar girls are more like escorts that do put out, but I've been with one or two that never had a happy ending.

I realise that some will disagree, and I know that most hires will involve doing the biz, but IMO the reason that it's tolerated by the authorities is that it's not a straight money for sex transaction.

It's not a competition of who is right or wrong.  It's an interesting topic, and has nothing to do with the morality of an individual, being the monger, or the bar girl.

For a prostitute to take the time to do her hair and make up and wear a nice dress, isn't she trying to gain the attention of perspective customers?  At that point, isn't she selling her beauty, to then be able to sell her services?

Say a prostitute trained at the gym 2 hours a day to have a good body.  Isn't the exercise she does focused on here anatomy, to increase sales?

What about fashion models that walk up and down a runway, or promo girls? In these cases, isn't beauty the asset this being sold?

I see your point. You assume I am viewing bar girls as not being human, a piece of meat etc.  You are wrong.

I have addressed this in a subsequent post.  Maybe the topic is simply a play on words.

Maybe "sexuality" or "sex appeal" is the product the girls are advertising, before the sexual services are offered.

Of course, some guys just like some company and a laugh, and will pay lady drinks for that.  It's not always about sex.

A bar with older, overweight, and unattractive girls isn't going to do very well.  So what are they selling to get customers in?  It's not the cold beer, which can be bought in every other bar.   Are they not selling the attractiveness of their staff?

What's your experience of Walking St just prior to covid or are you guessing? the street was busy and not just Chinese, people going to lots of different places. It was going strong, for me it was the best it's been in 7 years

Admittedly, I didn't go Walking Street as much as in the past.  When I did go, I noticed as you did, the popular places were busy, but customers dropped off quickly for other establishments.

Pedestrian traffic was busy, but it's free to walk through there and observe.

There were several news articles on TV for the 2019/20 high season, with senior Thai people stating in the media how quiet it was.

Whilst some establishment may never noticed a difference, I am quite sure the majority did.

I'm confident that most if not all the people on this thread saying Walking St is dead for good don't go there, probably stopped going when it got too expensive for them so a touch bitter

I never said Walking Street is dead for good.

I am saying, Walking Street wasn't exactly doing well, pre covid.  Yes, it was busy with pedestrian traffic, but for me, many places were quiet, compared to years gone by.

I would put it down to declining western tourism here, plus higher prices and poor exchange rates for tourists.  To some degree, back then, the rise of apps for meeting girls was starting to have an effect as well.

It's like TAT's statistics.  They show a huge increase in tourism, which corresponds with my observations, but what's the point if the revenue from the millions of extra tourist is still down on previous years from the traditional tourist market?

It must be noted the new demographic of tourists, mainly Chinese, Indians and Arabs, do not come from a drinking culture.

To sum it up, millions more tourists, plenty of bars for them, but they don't don't drink alcohol.

The general consensus of opinion was that it was busy on the street with looky-loos but the bars were not doing much. A walk down soi Diamond exhibited derelict beer bars and a few closed up GGBs with a lot of profitable history, but no future. It looked pretty lively strolling up the main drag, and two or 3 of the GGBs were packed, like Pinups, Tantra, places that were in fashion..... I was losing interest as the choice of places I liked was tumbling.... seemed like I was the kiss of death to them!

Heaven Above, the old Baby locations, but what made it look bad to me was the old Carousel Beer Bars being stationary.
