The whole system stinks of corruption from the local police demanding 2,000 baht if you refuse a urine test . The Thai public are not stupid they know huge brown envelopes are passed around to enrich people of authority and we all know Boss will never be sent to prison for the slaying of a police officer even in the No Confidence vote which ended on Saturday when once again the PM survived there were accusations of monies being promised for votes to ensure the powers that be remain in power .

This protection racketeering is quite notable and trickles down to the provincial and amphoe levels - as it has for decades.

J'ai décidé de ne pas m'énerver devant ces histoires de corruption et d'en rire. Je ne veux pas avoir affaire à la police ou au gouvernement ici parce que j'ai peur qu'ils m'extorquent. C'est définitivement un inconvénient de la vie en Thaïlande, mais je préfère quand même vivre ici plus qu'au Royaume-Uni.

I Think we know the same man . Before in Buriram immigration all was normal. Since 3 years they ask more money every time you renew Visa extensiOn and suddenly they stop to accept the affidavit of the French consulate. Amazing Thaïland

I wasn't expecting it.  It only happened once to me and now I avoid going there.  I found out afterwards that it is commonplace there.

What you say makes me smile. I came to live here in 1996, and sent a one-cubic-metre package of personal goods on ahead by sea. It disappeared into the guts of Customs in Bangkok, and I was told " . . . they're waiting for their bribe."  I was indignant and angry.

At that time there happened to be a big public outcry going on in the Thai papers and TV about corruption in Thailand. "Yeah, right, good, they've got what's coming!" was my reaction. But then I read a little bit closer about what was actually happening.

It turned out that the public wasn't up in arms about 'bribery and corruption' at all - this was an accepted part of life that folks just shrugged off.

 

No - they were furious about a glaring inconsistency in the corruption; the bribes to get your stuff in through the seaport and docks were higher than the cost of the bribes at the airport. Everyone was indignant at the unfairness of this, and people were protesting, and demanding that this dreadful inequality should be put right immediately.

 

This was 25 years back. Not much has changed since then.

The case has dragged on for many many years until most of the charges were dropped or reached their statute of limitation. For this result it took the committee a year to find out. WOW. Work was done in a flash. An incised media show to calm the angry population down. The population's trust in the judiciary, police, public administration and government is steadily approaching zero.

I'm pretty sure when a common man with no money in his bank account, drunk and full with drugs, races through the city at top speed; hits a policeman off a motorcycle, drags him 200 meters to death, does not stop and escapes. This common man would rot in prison since 8 years already.
