Villagers oppose new electric waste disposal plant in Sam Roi Yot

Villagers at Sam Roi Yot joined together to submit a letter to oppose the plans for an electric waste disposal plant in the area because they are afraid of the impact on the environment and the community. On August 26th, in front of the Silaloi district office of Sam Roi Yot, Prachuap Khiri Khan, more than 50 villagers from 2 sub-districts went to submit a letter of complaint to the Damrongtham district centre to oppose the construction of an electric waste disposal plant, in fear that it will affect the livelihoods of villagers, the environment and also agricultural crops.

Mrs Noppawan Pankong, the representative of the villagers, said that locally they have heard reports of plans to construct a new waste disposal plant in the Rai Khao area of the Khao Noi Municipality, and they are strongly opposed to it.

Fly tipping can continue unopposed then?

What's an electric waste disposal plant?

Disposal of electric waste or generating electricity from waste?

If the latter, we could use one here. So much rice and corn detritus burned in the fields, 'Garden' waste burned at the side of the road, or left to spread around the place. Plastic waste not taken by the rag and bone people, (recycling operators) and, worst of all, charcoal making generating smelly smoke. Not that that can be called waste, or course, just noting that the waste can be burned in a proper waste incinerator, electricity generated and emissions cleaned. The wife's 2 unused rai at the back of us are available, as are the 3 unused rai down the road...

I don't blame them.

Completely ruin your way of life so someone can dump toxic trash around your village.

Third world thinking for a first world problem.

Ship it to India.

For reference and to put their concerns into perspective (from link to original story):-

"If the construction is completed, the factory will receive up to 400 tons of waste per day from all areas of the province, this means heavy volumes of large trucks transporting garbage into the area, about 70 trips per day, which will cause pollution, and toxic fumes and substances affecting the daily life of the people in the region"

I am not surprised.

A few years ago an entrepreneurial local canvassed the village and neighbouring moobans to ask if they would each pay 20 Baht every 2 weeks to have a refuse wagon come around and collect waste, and the majority refused so it didn't happen.

So now we still put up with many small fires at every property (including ours) every few days. Reason, too expensive!

The only thing collected is the metal, glass and plastic waste, in return for money from the local recycling business.  Moving forward (or even backward) at snails pace.

If carried out in a proper EU way it will be a clean non toxic development ????
