Court decision to push back marriage equality ruling goes viral, prompts criticism

The Constitutional Court on Tuesday said it would move its ruling on marriage equality to December prompting a viral hashtag and online criticism.

 

The ruling has been postponed multiple times by the Constitutional Court since it was due to make a decision on the case in 2017.

 

While the majority of parliament, including those on both sides of the aisle, support marriage equality, the court has so far been unwilling to rule in favour of same-sex marriage.

Delaying is the word in Thailand. Why is it so difficult to come to verdict? It seems very clear that what is asked should be checked at the constitution. Why does that take 5almost 5 years to complete? Why no explanation of the delay?? Thailand is known for the gay community and should be an example for Asia and the world to show that gay people have rights too... Yes, a law, a civil union bill or samesex marriage  is needed here in Thailand because as there are no ways to do legal actions in case of death or decisions of life and death. Only family is allowed to make these decisions. I know that many gay people are banned by there family because they don't accept it... so please make decision we are waiting already so long

I was under the impression that marriage had never been on the table but rather some kind of Civil Union.

Sincerely December is not that far away and ... I am pretty sure that they are waiting for the reopening of the country coinciding with the high season to make their announcement and attract the newlywed gay couples from around the world encouraging them to flock in masses to the Land of the Free ( free quarantine included of course )

If the law is passed would gay marriage then have the same visa rights as "normal" marriage extension?

I think that there is no objection against the same sex marriage, but they are not willing to announce that. I believe the Government doesn't want it yet and I think they will try first to pass the Civil Union Bill. After a few years the will revive it and than a original marriage will be possible.. The people in charge are too old. They don't see the opportunities that will bring a samesex marriage to Thailand. Think about all the weddings of foreigners with or without a Thai on a beach and a party. A economic booster as Thailand is known for its acceptance in gays.  But ........

As mentioned above, the Cicil Union is on the table...not the Marriage. And the latter will never be voted if the Civil Union is adopted. As for your remark regarding the economic perk I might say that this is a small niche and looking back to what has happened in the last couple 17 months, I do doubt that this is a valid point

Gay people are always gay LOL.. As dr John Gray wrote Men are from Mars Women from Venus... Gay people don't have that difference LOL

 

For me it is no suffering happily, but a need in case something happens to me. I don't have any family and my partner is now not allowed to do anything. Of course we hired a lawyer but still it could stay problematic. Easiest way to solve the problems is a legal status. Civil Union or marriage I don't care.. but it keeps on going............. delaying and delaying

I agree with the court. Marriage should be between a man and a woman. Given that you can live with whom you like there is no longer any need too be married. Personally I would rather the courts did away with the institution of marriage altogether. There is no need for marriage these days.

Than they should change laws too. Probably you are not aware that if one of the partner dies the family of the deceased is in charge, because there is no relationship according to the law. But if your family doesn't accept the relationship and maybe don't have contact with them anymore, or if you don,t have parents or brothers and sisters anymore, who will be in charge? someone you hardly know? Because you partner doesn't exist nowadays in the law. Same for you are unable to give permission for treatment by a disease or accident. Only the lawful partner or family can do that... Imagine if it is life threating  and they have find family and give permission, because again, the law doesn't allow the partner not to do it. That are very existing problems and a marriage or Civil Union Bill could change that.

Maybe Thailand doesn't want its social policies to be controlled by backwards bigots like in Uganda, Russia, and Hungary.

 

Sooner or later marriage equality IS coming to Thailand. The only question is when.

I compare this to Norway's decision to deport a kid who was legally adopted in Thailand to the way the Thai institutions attitude to gay marriage or civil union. Someone legally in a civil union, in their home country is not in a civil union here.

How about marriage. Is a marriage in Saudi Arabia recognised here...one in Mali, Seychelles, New Zealand...?

My first thought also,  Can I divorce my wife and marry a thai man , then i would have no financial requirements for a visa? then i can be a thai citizen in 3 years ?

If you intend to marry for such reasons that is fraud. 

As far as immigration rules when Thailand legalizes same sex marriage or starts with a lesser civil union scheme its impossible to know yet.
