Hey this makes real sense let's open up to India.  get more variations of covid.  Do people not read.  The only country with more active covid cases is the U.S.

Why would you open up to a country that is black likested by many other countries due to the virus.

OH I AM SORRY

forgot logic?

I suspect the US is in a distant 2nd place to Thailands real favored tourists, the Chinese;  but we'll never know for sure

Well, there needs to be a definition of rich when you have a discussion based on the word.  To a Thai with a food stall foreigners spending 700b per day on a hotel room are rich.  By my own perspective these days rich means private jet travel.

Indians who have the dosh for a private jet are going to holiday in places where the other people of their economic status do, not a "developing country" (do they still use that term?).  The rich people of the Western world (especially movie star types) do not want to look out their windows and see poor people scrounging for a living.  Like it or not, LOS has reputation for corruption, prostitution, financial inequality, questionable health and sanitary facilities, among other things.  India even more so.*    I would doubt they would want to be in another country with more of same.

* Mumbai (was Bombay) used to get a lot of people from the Arabian peninsula who are there for surgery.  Especially during the northern hemisphere summer months, which is monsoon season in India and the hottest time on the Arabian peninsula (or so I've been told).  Going to India for medical procedures?  Really?  It's been a long time since I've been to Mumbai so I don't know if things have changed.

I am a Singaporean Indian who was raised and educated in UK and US and have become a Thai citizen 25 years ago and as far as I am aware, Indians from India are the worse kinds of tourists any country could ever hope for! If you were to check some of the India indians in Thailand or Bangkok facebook groups or blogs, you can see many of these India Indians are coming here on tourist visas to find jobs in Thailand or overstay their visas! The so called rich Indians are the worse misers! They can wear diamond rings worth millions but would bargain with a poor Thai vegetable seller by the roadside for even 5 baht. They do not tip, are rude and expect a lot of  freebies. They do not contribute much and as far as events like weddings, movie filming or once a film awards event, the hotels told me that they usually disappear with lots of unpaid bills! Also a lot have a problem with hygiene and and are misers when it comes to their own health. Hence be prepared for more new type of Indian SARS-CoV-2 variants coming. (The PCR tests or ATK are not the least accurate! and in India, vaccination certs are easily forged!) The Chinese tourists might be noisy rude and abnoxious, but they do spend money, do tip and some are even at thousand times better behaved and do have class (esp the younger educated ones). Please no Indians from India for Gawds sake! More than ever, the Thai govt should banned these Indians from the country!

Interesting. My admittedly harsh view is that the the Chinese and Indians deserve each other. Both present major challenges. Virtually everything you said about India Indians has a corollary for China Chinese.

If you are indeed Sprorean Indian, your message almost reads as if you've been brainwashed by Sino-poreans like so many other Sporean Indians (taking on the national character of their societal masters).

India Indians are no worse on balance than the China Chinese.

Singaporean influences are from their colonial master. The education system and civil service were British and influenced much of Singaporeans.

Was true long ago but certainly is not now. Singapore has long ago taken on a Chinese cultural model that dominates society. Ask any brown person (Sporean Indian, Sporean Malay) and they will tell you. Massive Sino-based racism in Spore. In fact, it's gotten so bad that the "gahmen" (government) had to introduce an Anti Racism law this year.

During colonial times, the Indians were 2nd to British and Chinese were 3rd.

Of course, as a Singaporean yourself, I know you know this, and now you know I know this, so no need to test the propaganda on me ????

Hyperbole much. The pandemic has resulted in more racist attitudes all over the world. This forum itself see much of this phenomenon.

Singapore is no exception recently with isolated racism; not massive that you insinuate. Singapore government has zero tolerance on racism which is the background of this new racism law. Even those isolated and small racist incidents will not be tolerated by the Singapore government. Singapore is seen by most as a country that has good racial equality.

Since 1849, Chinese became the majority race in Singapore. Don’t get off rail and make this a propaganda topic.

Thailand doesn't really care where you're from, really they want people from everywhere to come (as long as they have money of course).

They just pick countries with large numbers of rich travelers that might want to come to Thailand because it's an effective way to target them.

Very true.

If you are a Business owner in the UK, the chances are that the Accountant you pay Mega Bucks to for his expert advice Etc is just having a quick once over your Financial Records, and the all the work is sent to India for actual processing.

The Accountant then has a quick look over them again when the work is complete, before submission them to the Client.

Actually my accountant is Indian.  Been using her for twenty years and always had a brilliant service from her.  When she first started all those years ago she was very much a one man band but through her hard work and diligence she now has a very successful practice employing a team of about twelve.  All based in West London.  She is certainly no cheaper than any other accountancy firm but the service you get is second to none.

These so called 'wealthy tourists' if they do happen to visit Thailand, most do not for all the reasons in other posts, but if they do then they spend money in the big resorts and higher end malls. This accrued wealth then stays in the usual hands.

The mass tourism, which does in fact visit a mid-tier destination like Thailand, does spend all they can in local restaurants, franchise stalls at regular markets, 7-11s, beach hut bars, diving schools, small bars and clubs... and all the regular local Thai businesses that provide a living for the multitudes of Thais that operate or own these small businesses.

It seems the government are more concerned with filling already fat fingers whilst ignoring the tourism that supports the majority of Thais that just about get by. I've lived around Thailand for close to thirty years for at least part of each year and have many Thai friends who just about get by, even in better times. I know who I'd rather be spending money with.

Good and logical post and I agree on all of your points.  The problem is that there has been a decline in western tourists for some time now and it is usually them that use the facilities you mention.  Whether it is possible to get those tourists back in the same sort of numbers as before is doubtful.  Certainly in the foreseeable future.  It is certainly going to be tough for many ordinary Thais who rely upon tourism for their living.

However, many young Chinese and Indians are getting westernized in their views and outlook so maybe they will fill the gap!  I truly hope so.

Thailand is my home and has been for many, many years, and it will continue to be my home until I die. But every year without fail these old ' lures and campaigns' get trundled out with the same minimal impact.

If Thailand wants to be taken seriously as a world class resort - Think Bora, Bora, Monaco etc  - The playgrounds of the rich and wealthy. It needs to urgently and seriously upgrade its infrastructure and architecture. Move back from the piqueresque beaches and mountains and all too soon you will find a plathora of ugly cheap houses, shopfronts and cement buildings all constructed at the cheapest possible price (and the roads!!) . Yes, there are some truely amazing hotels, but step outside of them and you just find trash, litter and unsightly electrical cables, nestled up close to the 5 star resorts. And this is Thailand problem there has never been and planned development and enforcement of devlopment plans. The place looks an utter mess, but because Thai people are okay with it, they expect the rest of the world to be okay too. And they ain't. The customer is always right...and I hate to say this Thailand but your customers are foreigners...so listen to them.

A city need art, culture, museums, art galleries, race tracks, parks, casinos and NO STORMTROOPERS HARRASING PEOPLE!

India has done very well due to Invermectin.

They must be desperate as Thais generally dislike Indians, apart from Lord Buddha, but they don't know he was Indian due to their lack of geographical/historical knowledge. Lumpini park used to be India, before the border moved.

They must have a lot of horses in India
