First group of 43 passengers arrives from Japan as Thailand reopens borders Monday

The first 43 Thai and foreign passengers arrived at Suvarnabhumi international airport during the early hours today (Monday), the first day Thailand reopens to foreign arrivals. Tight health safety controls were in place with more officials present than arriving passengers.

 

The arrivals included 32 Thai nationals and 11 others of various nationalities who flew from Narita international airport in Japan.

 

Wearing full PPE suits, officials checked passengers’ documents, to make sure they met the safety and immigration requirements. All luggage was sprayed with disinfectants before being loaded onto waiting vans, which took them to their pre-booked accommodation.

PPE clothing (gowns, gloves, etc...) only provides a protection function if you take it all off and re-suit up between each interaction with different people. That's why you suit up at a hospital when you enter a room, then take it all off as you exit. Interactions with more than one person with the same gloves, etc., is the same as not wearing it at all. (Masks are different as they keep your spittle in no matter how many people you talk to.)

The officials and workers in the hazmat suits, greeting people who have had a negative Covid test within the last 72 hours, then finish work, go to a packed market on the way home wearing only a mask, and joining a crowd of thousands who may or may not have ever been tested.

 

It seems.....oddly inconsistent.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding.  The people coming into Thailand are vaccinated and tested.  Clearly masks, social distancing and alchohol shoul be used by all.  But HAZMAT suits.  Really.  I wish such efforts would be used at the local schools, markets and shopping areas where the real COVID transmission is taking place.  The central issue is to open up Thailand for the people living here now.  And do it safely.  The people arriving into Thailand under the current protocol will not adversely affect the spread of COVID, in my humble opinion.

You have to wonder how many sparsely populated and loss incurring flights the airlines will operate before it seems like throwing good money after bad - the airlines have their own financial imperatives to meet and apart from Thai, aren't obligated to serve Thai economic aims, as muddled and difficult as they are at present.

 

Still too many additional costs and hassles to get anywhere near the levels of passengers that make flights viable :  case in point - Bali, where I believe no international carrier has taken any landing slot with the so called 'opening.'

 

Ours is a group  of friends that has travelled around SE Asia for 25+ years to play golf, extended diving and beach trips and lots of partying back in the day - as yet, not one of us tempted to return with all the hassle involved.

Absolutely true - And these visitors are deemed necessary to revive a ruined Thai economic sector that will benefit many regular Thais, so make them feel welcome

The bonkers thing is, all that to 'greet' verifiably vaccinated and tested people then after the shift, taking it all off to have a drink and a meal with a load of people whose status is absolutely unknowable.
