Popular Post webfact
Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on Thursday dismissed the “Summit for Democracy” to be hosted by the US and to which Thailand was not invited as “nothing more than pure politics.” He also insisted that not all the ASEAN countries have been invited to join the virtual event scheduled for December 9-10. “It’s nothing more than pure politics being played by some countries against one another,” he said. Don was responding to a query during a House session from Suthin Klangsaeng, an opposition MP from Pheu Thai Party who questioned why Thailand was not invited to attend the summit. Popular Post RichardColeman
Let's hold a coup and let the Army run the country. Let's appoint 33% of the government pre election with our people. Let's ban and dissolve the opposition party. Let's moan about not being invited to a democracy summit 26 4
Popular Post Jingthing
Sure thing. Whether a country is a democracy or not is definitely all politics. Obviously there is no such thing as a perfect democracy. The host country the U.S.A. is certainly not that and indeed is in danger of falling off the cliff in that regard. But there are levels. For example Russia can't be considered a democracy just because they hold elections. 14
Popular Post Laughing Gravy
If they were invited you wouldn't here the last of it, with more headlines and pictures for weeks. Now they have been rejected, it isn't important. Like children throwing a rattle out of the pram. 17

IMO the rather idiosyncratic manner in US's selection and invitation for the summit is a poor thought out foreign policy. It send a mixed signal to friends and allies and deepen their views that US can't be trusted like in Afghanistan. In Thailand there are groups of professionals, politicians and youths that see US as an unworthy friend and this only benefit China's influence. US got a lot to do to build trust and goodwill with Thailand to balance the geo-political divergence. 1

Popular Post JonnyF
It's a simple way of showing Thailand that the world is not falling for their silly little sham. Their fake Democracy fools no-one. Thailand is run by a Junta that stole power illegally at the barrel of a gun. The "PM" is a soldier in a suit. What annoys the Thai government and it's cronies like this guy is that everyone knows it.

Ordinarily, I would agree with you. But the statement from the Thai foreign minister this time has upped the level to what I consider to be antagonistic. He actually sounded like a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, instead of a Thai one. This is the language that China has been using about the US. Finally, when have you ever heard a Thai foreign minister take this tone and this level of an insult towards China?
