Thailand's health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul faced the press yesterday to tell the Thai people - and any foreigner tourists who have come to the country - that New Year drinks can only be consumed on ONE night.

 

That's December 31st. Only to 1 am - then it's time to go home.

 

He reckoned that having this strict measure would help control things. 

 

New Year was being billed as a big celebration a couple of months ago and major stars were lined up. It was hoped tourists would be flooding in by now.

 

But as predicted by countless skeptics online this has proved to be completely untrue. 

 

Not only are there few tourists but the Thai people have shown in polls there is little appetite to celebrate amid the continuing state of the pandemic. 

 

Anutin was at pains to point out that people who do venture out as well as all operators and organisers must follow all the protocols.

 

In related news he said that more Omicron cases were being found because of the testing regimens now in place.

 

He encouraged Thais and people living in the country to get booster shots - these are being ramped up, reported Sanook.

 

And he reiterated that getting fake vaccine ID was a crime and damaged families as well.

 

He promised to come down hard on violators with the full force of the law.

He must be confused,  as restrictions were lifted on Alcohol  already,  and I dont mean restaurants.

Ludicrous decision.

 

Either it’s safe to go out drinking or it’s not, it shouldn’t matter what night of the year it is.

I wonder if he will be personally heeding this advice .........................LOL

Such a sad state of affairs when we need permisson from someone like Anutin to go out and celebrate New Year as we see fit.

 

Hopefully this misguided paternalism doesn't become the norm but I fear they're enjoying these powers too much to return them even when Covid is under control.

There are less and less people in care because of Covid on a daily basis. alcohol has been allowed for 6 weeks in Bangkok restaurants now. So where is the logic in this rule? It certainly has nothing to do with Covid based on the declining numbers.

Yep.  I can just see everyone stopping their party at 1 AM and saluting God Anutin.  Why does he even bother to say these things?   It will not happen.  No way.  Please Mr. Anutin, focus on your job and continue to get the vaccine to everyone who wants it here in Thailand.

The logical, the virus take a break during New year, but operate without being see, esse non videri.

As usual the Bang Sue venue is the start, but only if you got your first 2 jabs there.

Other provinces will have to wait to see what happens closer to home, same as last time.

I got 2 AZ shots eventually near my home at a municipality building used as a vaccination centre administered by the local health authority.

They have used the Mor Prom app, holding the details of the vaccinations.

I wonder if they will use information and last vaccination date to send out a 3rd appointment date for a booster, or if they'll have another registration scheme?

Nothing is clear.

So, if he expects the public to obey (which they won't), everyone will be thronging together at restaurant exits, and in the streets at 1.00am. And taxis will be overrun and crowded for short periods only.

Just like in the UK with closing pubs, it only encourages drunken people to gather. This could cause fights, future pregnancies, and of course the spread of this terribly flu thing.

Start 2022 as drunk as possible! "One Night in Bangkok!" then back to prohibition.  Oh Joy! ????

 

  So they want everyone to get a years worth of drinking into 24 hours?
