Thai Rath reported on the tragic death of two children in Chachoengsao in east/central Thailand.

A boy called Chanathip aged 6 and a girl called Jenjira, 8, had been missing from their houses since 1 pm yesterday.

By evening a search party was mustered to look for the two friends.

Neighbors saw their shoes at a five meter deep pond in a rubber plantation and decided to look under the water.

There they discovered the lifeless bodies of the children.

When Sanamchai Khet police arrived the children were already laid out at their respective houses.

Thai Rath said that the mother of the boy was inconsolable, crying as she cradled her son wrapped in a blanket on a wooden bed in front of the house.

An autopsy is being performed as police continue their investigations.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death of children in Thailand though these days it is rivalled by death on motorcycles, notes ASEAN NOW.

Having a pool 100 yards from out house has been beneficial to our daughter. At five she can jump in and swim to the other side in the deep end. She swims every day. We encourage it, We also fully supervise it.

We would never let our daughter out of our sight. She is also intelligent enough not to leave or swim away from supervision. Parents in this case have a lot to answer for.

That said, those banks look awfully steep for a 6 year old

How much effort and cost would it take to put a fence with a locked gate around the pond?

Less than the cost of the funerals and the heartache the parents will suffer.

Or teach them how to swim and or float.  If knowing that, almost impossible to drown in calm water.

Just looked at the photo.  They may have jumped in, and got stuck in the mud underwater.

Yes, just the basics, should be compulsory.

Some people shouldn’t be allowed kids .. ????‍♂️

No qualification needed. None at all. I'm only surprised that the kid was 'being looked after' by his mother, as so many are handed over to grandparents or others to do it. Many have kids simply as an insurance policy for them to be taken care of in old age, and have no interest or ability to do the job themselves. Often, they can't afford not to work and only be a parent but they have kids anyway and them absolve themselves of the responsibility of actually being a parent.

A similar pond has been built not far from our house. No fence. Only a matter of time before the same thing happens there. But no-one really care enough to do anything.

We use to say "Krokodilletranen huilen als het kalf verdronken is."

Losely translated, it's something like "Crying crocodile tears when the calf is drowned".

A 5 meter deep pount left accessible to young kids is waiting for a calamity to happen.
