CORRECTION: Earlier, we posted that Phuket had 416 new cases out of which 219 were from abroad. The national Top 10 also listed Phuket with 416 new cases. Our tweet should have read, Phuket reported a record 635 news cases, out of which 219 were from abroad. We regret this error.

Oh dear, not looking good for the school situation here. Still restaurants and bars open for the tourists and locals, forget the kids who live here and deserve an education.

Can you buy a test kit in the pharmacy ??? Or where else can we get them ?

Yes you can, but my experience in Pattaya at least has been hit and miss with availability and prices range from around 60 to nearly 200 THB in some cases.

What I found best is ordering from Lazada/shopee. I ordered 20 nasal/throat test kits on the 2nd Jan, were here by midday on the 4th. With post charges worked out around 65 baht a kit.

Bangkok preps for Omicron surge with ambulance drills, entertainment clampdown

Bangkok’s governor has instructed all 50 districts of the capital to make urgent preparations for a surge in Omicron cases.

Aswin Kwanmuang ordered district officials to tighten controls on the spread of Covid-19, focusing on entertainment venues, pubs, bars and karaoke outlets.

Patients who develop mild symptoms will be treated under Home Isolation,” Bangkok Metropolitan Administration permanent-secretary Khajit Chatchavanich said on Saturday.

“They will receive a thermometer, fingertip oximeter, anti-fever Fah Talai Jone pills and other drugs," he explained.

Cyprus reportedly discovers a Covid variant that combines omicron and delta

A researcher in Cyprus has discovered a strain of the coronavirus that combines the delta and omicron variant, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, called the strain “deltacron,” because of its omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, Bloomberg said.

So far, Kostrikis and his team have found 25 cases of the virus, according to the report. It’s still too early to tell whether there are more cases of the strain or what impacts it could have.

Meanwhile, raw deaths count all causes now available for December. I have no time yet to analyse the full year but December 2021 is around 5000 deaths higher than 2020.

BTW, anyone knows a source where I could find the official Covid deaths count for Thailand month by month? I would like to make a comparison for the whole year sequence.

Thailand's more amazing than that, its actually gone down when you count the ATK results.

8th Jan: ATK + PCR = 10,029

9th Jan: ATK + PCR = 9,776

It's likely the weekend effect (less testing and/or less reporting).

The Jan 9 report today is tallying totals of the end of Sat Jan. 8.

383,002 vaccine doses administered yesterday

It's a curious trend lately that 3rd shot booster doses often are outnumbering the numbers of first and second doses given on various days, such as above....

And yet, still, about one-third of the Thai population hasn't yet been fully vaccinated with the two regular doses thus far.

I don't know what that language above from As-win is supposed to mean....  But on the way home last night, all the regular non-gogo bars (quasi restaurants) in my central BKK neighborhood were open and serving alcohol as usual. No special precautions seen. Everyone sitting around drinking in close proximity maskless.

Same as we saw when we walked down Nana and then out on Sukhumvit.

And the figures keep creeping up from the 75 cases yesterday.

Health officials on Sunday (Jan 9)  reported 97 new COVID-19 cases, 60 of which were found in Hua Hin. A further 9 cases were found in people who had travelled to Hua Hin from overseas.

Elsewhere in the province, 5 cases were found in Pranburi, 2 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 8 cases in Kuiburi, 11 cases in Thap Sakae, 4 cases in Bang Saphan, 1 case in Bang Saphan Noi, and 6 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan. No new deaths were reported today.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced that alcoholic beverages can be served until 9:00 PM at eateries in the capital with SHA+ certification or that meet Thai Stop COVID 2+ standards. The announcement was signed by Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang and goes into effect today (Sunday, 9 Jan).

Entertainment outlets, bars, pubs and karaoke venues that want to change their status to restaurants are meanwhile required to seek permission from district offices that will assess their preparedness in accordance with disease control and prevention measures currently in place. They must also meet SHA+ and Thai Stop COVID 2+ standards and only serve alcoholic drinks until 9:00 PM.

According to the SHA+ or Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration standards, hygiene and safety measures must all be met while at least 70% of active staff must be fully vaccinated.

Creative accounting for saving the sandbox is my guess.........................

"Can anyone explain this? In the Top 10, it says 416 cases for Phuket which is only local cases. It doesn’t include 219 from elsewhere. However, Samut Prakan shows 669 cases (352 local cases and 317 from elsewhere). So, why is the Top 10 not showing 635 cases for Phuket? #Thailand"

Figures are all over the place, we have different figures published provincially to central, have figures put up them changed few hour later. Know what they say about liars, they trip up eventually.

Because of the 6 that tested positive on test number 2 and then left, with 3 staying in Trat and the others on Koh Chang?  If thats the way they are looking at this then the possibility of closing the country looms large.  Not panicking or anything but are they going a little overboard...

Interesting chart in today's MoPH COVID update documents.

If I'm reading it correctly, it's showing a single-day snapshot of the number of positive COVID cases found among incoming travelers ranked by country, with the U.S. with a slight lead over 2nd place Russia.
