Curious stat in today's detailed breakdown of national vaccination rates by target group. The chart below is saying a higher percentage of students age 12-17 thus far have been fully vaccinated with two doses vs. a lower percentage of full vaccination for the elderly age 60 and above:

Authorities have instructed all provincial governors to prepare for a new surge in COVID-19 infections.

Police and municipal officials in Pattaya City of Chon Buri Province have meanwhile initiated evening patrols to ensure that nightclubs and restaurants comply with control measures. Meanwhile, officials in Khon Kaen Province have established three new field hospitals and have prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages in all districts.

Provinces have tightened measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. In Ubon Ratchathani province, provincial governor Phongrat Phiromrat asked residents to avoid going out between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM, imposing lockdowns in five villages in Nam Khun and Na Yia districts for 14 days due to an increase in local cases.

It sounds as if the BMA is starting to get a little worried. ATK testing as above post by @onthedarkside tells me that things are worrying the provincial folks here in Bangkok.

Noticing that many pharmacies are out of kits.

total tested ?

Probably in the high 10's thousands if not higher if you include ATK but then most people won't report a positive ATK because they are worried about getting incarcerated.

Me thinks that the official figures don't tally with measures and restrictions been put in place, limiting alcohol, limiting alcohol hours in blue zones, police patrols in Pattaya, national park closure's, etc. Pretty sure the CCSA and authorities know the true numbers of infection. Compare it to a news clip I saw of Mexican president saying they have no surge, not ramping up restrictions on tourism, don't even publish vaccination figures. That's a true head in the sand haven't a clue.

Taken from yesterday's update:

Can anyone explain this? In the Top 10, it says 416 cases for Phuket which is only local cases. It doesn’t include 219 from elsewhere. However, Samut Prakan shows 669 cases (352 local cases and 317 from elsewhere). So, why is the Top 10 not showing 635 cases for Phuket? #Thailand

Anyone else noticing a trend here? Numbers are ticking up, but deaths are not. This pathetic and weak Omi seems to be the beginning of the end, let's hope.

If you analyze data from around the world what is staggering is nobody is ending up in intensive care.  I had a friend and his family get Omicron - it was a cold he said and he has significant health issues.

The only real problem coming is A)  What is the vaccination rate in Thailand and B)  Testers will run out of tests or people to test because everyone is getting exposed to this.

Omicron has been called one of the most contagious diseases in human history.

But in other countries like the UK and US with better public reporting of public health data, hospitalizations due to Omicron have been rising. If it's so "pathetic and weak" as you put it, why are COVID hospitalizations spiking just lately again now?

From Friday's CDC update:

U.S. New COVID Hospital Admissions

"The current 7-day daily average for December 28, 2021–January 4, 2022, was 16,458. This is a 60.2% increase from the prior 7-day average (10,271) from December 21–December 27, 2021."

And a slightly later version of the same data via chart form:

Rising deaths in the past have trailed rising COVID hospitalizations. Whether that will be the case or not in this current Omicron wave, I think it's too early to tell for the time being.

But it bears remembering, in Thailand and the U.S. right now, about one-third of the overall population still has not received two vaccine doses as yet, much less a third booster shot that the medical experts say is needed to best fight off Omicron.

So there remains large populations of not fully vaccinated folks out there. And disproportionately larger numbers of them, at least in the U.S.,  are ending up being hospitalized lately with the explosion of new Omicron cases.

Look at what the vaccination rate is in the USA, and delta.  Delta affects the lower lungs and Omicron primarily affects the upper respiratory tract.

No doctor here, just being a parrot.

Omicron infections are the majority in the U.S. right now, and total numbers of new COVID hospitalizations are spiking with the explosion of new Omicron cases.

The rate of COVID hospitalizations from Omicron vs Delta is widely said to be substantially less.  But the infectiousness and spread of new cases from Omicron is vastly outstripping Delta that came before.

Once you get such a large influx of new Omicron cases, even with a lower RATE of hospitalizations, the sheer increase in volume of cases is going to drive overall increases in hospitalizations, which is exactly what's occurring now.

That's why those who advocate letting Omicron run unchecked, or even encouraging its spread, are pushing a course that heads for public health disaster.

Spot on. Both my daughters are frontline NHS workers back in the UK and omicron is ripping through the hospital staff. Some days between 10 and 20% of staff are off sick or isolating so the effect this has on hospital care is devastating. Stress levels of staff having to cope with the hugely increased workload is through the roof too.

I’m literally just out of my doctors after a moderna 3rd dose they are saying maybe not a 4th dose I asked because I want to come back to Thailand next year plus I think why Thailand needs 4th or 5th is because they gone cheap on vaccines compared to other countries..

Simple. It is far more contagious. More people are getting the virus. But, the fatality rate is way down as a percentage of infections. That is the all important aspect of this weak and pathetic variant.
