BANGKOK (NNT) - The issue of heightened product prices has become a major point of contention at this week’s general debate in Parliament. The Opposition alleges that expensive products and low wages resulted from cost mismanagement. The prime minister, meanwhile, asserted that inflation has taken hold worldwide and prices have thus increased.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha asserted that price increases of products came about in tandem with heightened inflation worldwide. Price rises are not limited to Thailand, where the inflation rate was 1.2% in 2021. In comparison, Japan’s inflation rate was 2.6%. The premier asked that critics be fair with the government and take into consideration circumstances in the global market. However, Gen. Prayut acknowledged that prices of some products have risen beyond what the costs justify. He noted the government will be implementing measures to remedy heightened product prices, while it works to keep inflation from exceeding 3%.

The prime minister said the government tried its best to reduce the burden that high fuel and energy prices have on people. He said 33 billion baht from the Oil Fund was used in 2021 to subsidize oil prices. Furthermore, the Oil Fund contribution rates were adjusted and borrowing has been made to prop up the fund’s liquidity.

Gen. Prayut cited the Co-pay program as one of the measures issued to reduce people’s expenses. He asserted that Co-pay was implemented to lessen people’s food and beverage bills and expenses incurred from buying consumer staples. He said purchases may be made at registered sellers and vendors, not at outlets operated by tycoons as alleged by some parties.

The Inflation Rate in Thailand is indeed controlled by the Government.

At least the hype, propaganda and mirrored smoke are.

Inflation at 1.2 % ????

Where have they gotten that figure from, as all the items are going up in the Markets, Shops Etc by at least 20 % across the board on everything except Diesel, and Electric.

" The Government tried its best to reduce peoples expenses".

Note : " Tried " and not " are Trying ", which means they really dont have a clue and have given up trying.

Prayut even admits to prices being Gouged and still the people have to suffer under a spineless Government.

Inflation rate, unemployment rate, crime rate, and Covid numbers in Thailand are all controlled and devised by the government.

Only tourist numbers, incl. expenditures, and arrival numbers for years to come, are concocted by the TAT.

What has the price of anything worldwide got to do with the price of anything in Thailand?

I even noticed yesterday as I was buying bread on my way home a "half-loaf" of bread in 7-11 was 40 baht, last week it was 30 baht ????

PM Says at General Debate Government Tried Its Best To Reduce People’s Expenses......really?

How about making a serious effort to eradicate or at least minimize corruption....a huge expense to every single person in the whole country (except those actually benefitting from said corruption)?

How about an effective Monopolies and Mergers commission to break up the likes of CP and prevent them fixing prices due to a serious lack of competition.?

Agreed. But what would be much more effective is cutting the rampant corruption, all the kickbacks that need to be paid to get anything of any magnitude done in this country.
