During the 11th Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Thailand has joined 140 countries voting in favour of the resolution to condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, while 5 voted against and 35 abstained.

Vietnam and the Lao PDR were the only ASEAN countries to abstain, as well as countries such as China, India, Iran, and Iraq.

The five states voting against the resolution were Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria.

Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations, explained that Thailand carefully considered the draft and voted in support of the resolution because of the overriding importance Thailand attaches to the principles contained in the United Nations Charter and international law, in particular respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the non-use of force against countries.

Is this a U-turn or a Flip-Flop and will Thailand stick to its signatory or was it a meaningless signature and statement since they did not mention Russia in their statement......

Just as the speaker asked everyone to cast their vote Dr. Suriya Chindawongse's gf called and he fumbled slightly upon answering the call and pushed the yes button instead of the no button .....   :w00t:

Thai Government Expresses Support for UN Resolution Against Violence in Ukraine

by Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand voted in favor of a resolution against violence in Ukraine at an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York, the United States.

Following the debate, 141 member states out of 193 voted in favor of the resolution, 35 abstained, and five voted against. Seven other ASEAN states voted in favor of the resolution, while Cambodia and Laos abstained.

Thailand’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Suriya Chindawongse said on Wednesday that Thailand was gravely concerned about the escalation of hostilities and violence in Ukraine as a result of the use of military force, which has resulted in the death of innocent civilians and the destruction of property and civilian infrastructure.

Thailand’s position is consistent with the statement made by ASEAN foreign ministers on Saturday.

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha stressed during a meeting this week that Thailand will retain its neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine crisis. He also advised participants to bear in mind Thailand’s long-standing relationship with Russia and to tread carefully.

I dont remember ever condemning birma's military coup.
contrary to opposing civil war in birma, they do supply their army with supplies over the border and stand together with russian military counterparts on a defilade in Rangoon

Wow! The balls finally dropped on this puppy. How brave, finally.

I thought we would witness

"Cryptorchidism"  on the part of the powers that be.

Obviously he didn’t get the memo from Prayut but instead went with the populist Thai sentiment.

OK Thailand, now follow this up with actions!

Speak out against russia and for Ukraine, next condem any contact with russia and stop russian

tourists from coming here.

Wait, before everyone gets all excited about their vote, thinking they've changed their mind. They have an "explanation" that somehow never mentions Ukraine or Russia.

Quote

Mr. President,

1. Thailand has carefully considered the draft and voted in support of the resolution because of the overriding importance that Thailand attaches to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and those of international law, in particular respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the non-use of force against States.

2. Our support of the resolution also underlines our deep concerns for the plight of affected civilians and the humanitarian consequences of the hostilities and violence in the area. In this regard, we call on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law.

3. We are also concerned with the potential longer-term consequences on the rules-based international order, and renew our call towards peace and for all parties to enhance dialogue through various means to truly realise a peaceful settlement of the situation.

4. Thank you.    https://image.mfa.go.th/mfa/0/65eEO8OxFL/11th_ESS/EOV.pdf

Thailands vote to condemn Russia is nice but followed up by joining the sanctions and shipping weapons to Ukraine would be nicer.

The general could start his day by going through the inventory and see what he can spare......

Well, but India and China abstained. Just these two countries is more than half of the earth population.

  • Popular Post

Hmm
I don't remember all these condemnations when another big country invaded a small country under false pretenses and killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. There must be some kind of unknown law deciding which country can invade and which one can't....

And they hate each other. No solidarity, there. Not to mention that when the time comes for China to infiltrate and absorb vast amounts of territory in Russia's east, there will now be a clear precedent established by Russia itself for them to do so.

It takes a Russian businessman to seek Putin's demise as a continuing war criminal, while the USA, UK, and EURO countries sit on their butts thinking sanctions will suffice in the long term. Yes, mates, but by dilly-dawdling along, Putin would be still free to launch a freaking nuclear war.

Well there goes the property market in Southern Phuket.  Nice that Thailand found its spine.  The ruble really will be rubble.

Ruskies have been a non-factor ruble wise since 2015 / Crimea and their first finacial crash.  So 2016 to pandemic / 2020.    No loss to Thailand, just the families here they will no longer be supporting.

Only real concern is oil imports.   Either they'll be cheaper, due to exchange rate, or stopped, doubtful, and nothing will really change, except they'll use another fake reason for raising the price at the pump.

Laos may have done but not Cambodia, according to today's Khmer media (Thursday 3rd March 2022):-

Cambodia is among the 141 countries that support this decision.

What Thailand saw were the possible consequences of not voting in favour of condemning Russia, future trade talks could have been sketchy to say the least.
