Garage owner chases thief after his pick-up is stolen - he catches up and hits rear of vehicle causing it to overturn

Thai Rath reported a chase drama on the Khon Kaen to Udon Thani road (Mitraphap Highway) after a man stole a Toyota Vigo pick-up from outside Choke Chai garage.

 

The owner of the garage, Ratthawut, 32, said he had arrived at his garage to open up for the day and left the keys in the ignition and the engine running.

 

A man clambered in and drove off. So Ratthawut borrowed bis brother's Isuzu D-Max pick-up and gave chase.

The thief turned off the main road onto the road bypassing Nong Bualamphu where Ratthawut decided to collide with the rear of his vehicle. 

 

It overturned and the thief was left unconscious after colliding with the steering wheel. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

 

Ratthawut dragged him out. He had no ID but was covered in tattoos. He was taken to Soon Udon Thani Hospital.

Police had been monitoring the chase after being contacted to organize a roadblock. 

 

In all the chase lasted 15 kilometers.

 

The suspect was kept under police guard at the hospital and when he came round said that his name was Woraphan, aged 32.

 

He was in a confused state but not drunk and police were unable to ascertain where he was from.

 

He had suspected broken ribs. 

 

He has been charged with theft.

If someone rammed my car into the back of another I'd be somewhat annoyed...

Well done to Ratthawut. This is the reason theft is relatively rare here, because people actually defend their property so the thief has to take quite a risk to take it.

 

I also suspect a few of the thiefs injuries occured after the crash, rather than during the crash.

I'm sure he chased in a responsible manner, not endangering any one else.

@Smithson has a good point and one I wanted to make. Although many of us would act, or want to act, in a similar way, the garage owner acted dangerously, and he was the one who left the keys in the ignition in the first place.

Innocent road users could have lost their lives in the chase which obviously was quite dramatic, looking at how it ended.

Very true....I would have no great sympathy for the guy who stole the pick up if he died.......but that would put you in the frame, possibly, for murder.

That's because if you were British and in that country it's  so screwed up the thief would probably get a medal and the owner a prison sentence.

Ramming a car to cause it to overturn would be a good start 

What speeds were reached to have this man who drove off in his car to be rammed i can only imagine . Legal speed i doubt it
