Economic expansion can hardly be compared to "Political/Military" expansion. With the intent of the Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO, for Vladimir in the Kremlin, a "red-line" was crossed. What does a human/chimpansee do when feeling cornered and encircled? He ist taking "counter-measures" to break the encirclement. What is new or surprising about this?

Better having Russia as a NATO member than waiting for the fallout of a creepy Russia-China alliance. (Extra bonus: if China had a long northern border 'with NATO', what would be the odds of them trying to invade Taiwan?)
