Thai Rath reported that following the cabinet meeting yesterday the Government House spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek briefed the press about the issue of the public making their own alcoholic beverages.

 

Prayuth Chan-ocha, the prime minister, said people should be free to do so, though they must be restricted from selling the liquor. 

 

And it was not to be a free for all. It was important that standards in the production of alcohol must be met.

I guess if they know what they are doing it's not so bad.......but easy to kill a dozen or so people when you get it wrong.

Yeah but making stills/moonshine is as old a profession as prostitution.....They have had centuries of practice but yes...undistilled or more like swipe/fermentation style brews can be a recipe for problems

I have been making fruit wines for years, 2 years ago I made the jump to beer. Every thing required is available on lazada, including a good choice of hops. It's a very enjoyable hobby.

Thai cabinet rejects draft Progressive Liquor Bill

The Thai cabinet rejected the Move Forward Party’s draft Progressive Liquor Bill yesterday (Tuesday), which seeks to liberalise the production of liquor for non-commercial purpose.

 

Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said that the cabinet rejected the bill because liquor production for non-commercial purposes is already possible, provided that the production process complies with quality and environmental controls, to ensure the safety of those who consume it.

She said that the cabinet has instructed the Finance Ministry to amend its regulations regarding liquor production in a way that does not restrict the right of the public to produce liquor for non-commercial purposes.

There are plenty of recipes for making pineapple beer on the internet, when South Africa banned booze sales due to Covid it kind of became the national drink down there. Pineapples are dirt cheap here, so why not give it a go?

Bottom line is th at people that own the big 3 are not going to let people that want to make a better quality beer exist.

I am sure a lot of the older North Americans here can remember the big screaming that happened when Toyota, Honda, KIA et al came to North America.

You knew as soon as this bill was intrcepted by the cabinet that this would be the result. A cabinet full of elderly men looked after by the big Thai families and not all elected politicians.

Most of the people that drink home made booze where I live are nearly blind or fully blind. Is this the standard he wants?

Nobody dies or goes blind from "home made" alcohol. It's only when it is unscrupulously spiked with methanol for resale that this happens. The term for this is bootlegging, as in bootlegged alcohol which is NOT the same as homemade. Nobody is going to spike their own booze with methanol. Duh. You do know the difference between ethanol and methanol, right? Most of us do. That's why God gave us wikipedia. Thanks for helping to spread misinformation.

It is called lao khao.

 

Fermentation generally produces a mixture of ethyl and methyl alcohol.  Depending on the strain of yeast the ratio can vary.  Both alcohols are poisons and both can make you feel drunk.  The problem is that methyl alcohol is many times more poisonous than ethyl alcohol.  Methyl alcohol metabolizes into formic acid, which is what actually poisons you.  Ethyl alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde and acetate, which are less poisonous than formic acid.

Brewer's yeast should be used for home brewing since it produces very little methyl alcohol.  Wild yeast should not be used since there is no way of knowing what the ratio of the alcohols will be. 

 

Proper distillation can reduce the amount of methyl alcohol in the distillate to a non-harmful amount.  The problem is that to do that you need to measure the temperature of the vapor as it enters the condenser so only the correct alcohol winds up in the distillate.  This is something which backyard and boot leg distillers rarely do since they don't have a proper thermometer as part of their still and since they usually rely on wild yeast there is certainly a chance you can be poisoned by methyl alcohol in your lao khao.

 

Personally I love a bottle of Thai home brew sato (Thai rice beer) now and then.  The filtered and pasteurized bottled sato you can buy is pure excrement by comparison.  The problem is that the Thai home brewers generally rely on wild yeast so you can wind up with a greater than desirable quantity of methyl alcohol in the sato.  When I find it I still will drink a glass of home brew sato, but no more than that.  It is one drink I do look forward to brewing when I finally move to my wife's family home, assuming I am still able to do more than simply sit in a chair and drool by then.

Who needs a Still?

It is quite possible to get 100% alcohol from home brewed wine. Its a very simple and not expensive.

I've been doing it for sixty years with no additions of any kind.

The brewed wine is still palatable but alcohol free.

The alcohol can be used to fortify other wines, such as carrot whisky, parsnip wine and others.

While still in the demijohn, after filtering place the demijohn into the freezer. What doesn't freeze is pure alcohol.

It explains why verse 4:43 seems to assume that drinking  alcohol was accepted while the later verse 5:90 strongly rejected it

Quran 5:90 “O you who believe! Intoxications and gambling, (dedication of) stones and (divination by) arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handwork: so avoid it that you may prosper.”
