Led strip light trips my safe-t-cut

Featured Replies

I wired a strip light a few years ago to a socket with an on/off switch

This was led and it kept tripping the Safe-t-cut

I then just plugged it into a extension cable and it worked fine and still does

Now today i did the same wiring 2 led spotlights to a switch and i am having the same problems with the safe-t-switch

Looking online it says it an 'inrush' which is causing this to trip

Can anyone help with what to do as if i leave it switched on it is fine but as soon as i switch it off the breaker is tripped

If i connect this to a extension cable it is fine.

Many thanks

Ok just worked this out the extension cable from before had a surge protector(data extension cable)

So that is what is stopping the inrush tripping my safe-t-cut

So is there any way i can do this without having to get a surge protector extension lead

I expect the latest model safe-t-cut would be a good idea but must be a cheaper way

Many thanks for reading this

What type of safety cut is it, ....?

A photo would be good.

And is it going off on earth leakage or over-current?

One lamp shouldn't be tripping the beast, inrush wouldn't be that big on a domestic install (it's definitely a problem on large installations).

The surge arrestor shouldn't making any difference, could possibly be the extra cable length.

Most odd.

Hi its a very old safe-t-cut model

As soon as i run it through a cheap Data extension cable it works fine.

If i try to connect without just with the standard wall switch it will trip

Probably worth changing yo a newer model

It only happens when switched off.

I could think the switch isnt right. It should switch off, but maybe not. Contact still running with a resistance then.

Oxidized contact? Voltage influenced and there for the safety cut.

As the safety cut sees a differential between live and neutral and switches off. Is it an adjustable one?

With the surge arrestor, you still could have a loop in which the safety cut feels comfortable.

What sensitivity is it set to??

If you post a photo we can show you how to tell if it tripped on over-current or earth-leakage.

It would also be helpful to see how the LED strip is powered.
