In an unexpected diplomatic move, ASEAN has decided to delay the granting of “comprehensive strategic partnership”status, or CSP, to the US until November, according to an informed source.

The source, who asked not be identified, said that, at the informal ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting on Wednesday night, they agreed that the US should wait until all procedural processes for the CSP have been completed. Washington has yet to apply officially and all the ASEAN members have yet to discuss and make assessments.

India also has asked ASEAN for the new upgraded status of CSP. Last year, ASEAN granted CP status to both China and Australia.

It's called assessing how far China's influence will spread and the havoc it will cause. Just like with Russia invading the Ukraine now, but then you don't care do you.

So which side will Thailand be on if China invades Taiwan? This is the real question the US is asking.

ASEAN...according to the US!

There's a few in that group that really shouldn't exist!

I for one would also like to know what side Thailand would be on? Or would it remain neutral like with Russia's war on Ukraine?

ASEAN useless in any shooting war with China. Why US is bothering to “ apply” to these clowns. Logistics Bases Only. Stay out of US way when shooting starts ! Buggers either “ neutral” or allied / cooperating with Enemy China !

Daft Question(s). Clearly Thailand will not help in any way against China. ASEAN completely useless in any US - China conflict except logistics based & Vietnam maybe.

Asean countries enjoy an almost $140 billion trade surplus with the US. The US should immediately take measures to reverse that situation. But they'll never do so. Don't doubt for a moment that China would not retaliate were it humiliated diplomatically on the world stage like this. But the US will do nothing. Look at the tweets from the US Embassy in Thailand. Nothing but happy talk. Inept and weak. At the very least there should be an announcement from the US this afternoon explaining the need for extended safety inspections of all goods being imported into the US.

ASEAN puts US on hold ?
give me a break !! ASEAN should BEG USA for the privilege!????????

Hes still trying to work out who or what he should be pointing at  ????

Agreeing or not to the partnership is no real deal at the end of the day.  The US never keeps to its word if it doesnt suit them.

As he can't speak English he's the spare Pr##k at the wedding, all he can do is nod and grin.

And last week thailand reached agreements with China for working together.  555.

You'd be hard pressed to find this "summit" on the front page of ANY newspaper in the US and likely not even a blip on the evening news cast of any of the 3 major TV networks. That's how important America thinks of this organization of totalitarianism.

As ASEAN includes countries which have people in power through the use of force, they shouldn't even be given the time of day.

Im afraid those times are over

What's with Prayut's hair in that photo?  Looks like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals.  Must be the lamp in the background.

Can still be used for capable function, limited to logistics bases & training grounds. But ASEAN being hopeless in any shooting war, so needing West protection or (neutrality I suppose)should be inviting West not West “ applying” then being messed around by these monkeys ; Squeeze song “begging’s not my business”.

It’s because they know that US will be in dire straits come November: economy crashing, inflation in double digits, political impasse after Republicans take both houses, deficit spending soaring, riots in the streets. It’s much easier to negotiate terms with a weakened partner.

Yet Asean has that $140 billion trade surplus with the US, which, were I the US government, I would take away from selected Asean countries. I would use the proposed Indo-Pacific Economic Framework to peel away the Philippines and Singapore, which are the only Asean countries wanting to join. Push US investment and future trade only to those two countries, leaving the rest of Asean to wonder where its trade surplus went.
