Thailand should call time on 2pm to 5pm alcohol sales ban: Kla

Thailand should end the ban which prevents alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm in order to help boost tourism.

 

According to Atavit Suwannapakdee, secretary-general of Thailand’s Kla Party, the rule, which is part of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, is outdated and should be scrapped.

 

Mr Atavit said the rule was originally introduced in 1972 to prevent civil servants from drinking in order to encourage them to be more productive.

 

Mr Atavit said that no other countries in the region have such rules regarding the sale of alcohol and that they continue to present an obstacle for tourism operators.

Not yet, but a work in progress.  

 

Testing ... see if tourist can behave themselves first, when out & about,

then let the rest enjoy some afternoon sipping.

 

Don't think I'd be motivated to go to a hotel just to sip a few.  Pre-plan and 

set up elsewhere, more natural setting, and advantage of inexpensive with

excellent customer service.   Nobody bartends as good as myself.

Desperate people trying to find silly reasons hoping tourists would come flocking. THirty million tourists came before Covid even with the ban. We don't need any more tourists than 39 million. These people have gone bonkers. Severely lacking in original ideas.

The only way to attrack the tourists again is being a welcoming country.. Stop with the restictions on alcohol... educate for friendly immigration, stop double pricing, don't chase foreigners on motorcycles for not wearing helmets/driverslicense/masks and all that kind of stuff but treat them as guest, which doesn't mean that they also must follow the law, but it seems that the police like to fine and blame foreigners for everything.  And make the country safer in travelling, robbing tourists

And for long stayers.. easy visa rules as no 90 days report anymore, no worpermit for volunteer work,  etc...

No, I would rather have them follow the laws.......

I am a foreigner here and I don't seem to get hassled by the police in a way you suggest.

They have but only in hotels... I wish someone could explain to me the merits of banning the sales of alcohol between those hours, what is suppose to happen between those hours that people should consume alcohol in those hours? anyone?..

And clearly that did not work, rather only helped them in being more corrupt. So on that basis alcohol sales 24/7 hours should be allowed so that civil servants  are too drunk to steal from the taxpayer.

50 years ? I believe that to be the normal amount of years Thailand is behind the rest of the civilized world in most things

Apart from internet speeds compared with Europe/UK and many other countries. But that is about it though

As with most things here....notice the closing time is 2pm....long after the civil servants should have returned to work after lunch...

Why not 11am till 2pm?

Most of the laws in Thailand are outdated.

Just look at the ganja fiasco.

Law comes in and then there's a rush to amend and ban this and ban that.

Unfortunately the inertia of government here means these outdated laws, immigration being a prime example, are just left as they are.

Upon which civil servants took to drinking from 8:30am till 1pm, of course; and ESPECIALLY during lunch time.

Producing a foreign passport should be an exemption from these stupid 2-5pm rules. Also an exemption for the ban on alcohol on election days/religious days when foreigners can't even vote and are generally not Buddhist (and if they are, they should still be allowed to choose).

 

They have no problem discriminating against us with dual pricing etc. Why not flip the script on this one? Preventing a Catholic from having a glass of red wine with his meal because it's Makhu Bucha day sounds like Religious Bigotry to me.

Because that's lunch time for officials. 2pm to 5pm is their siesta.

They can also order some Bottles a few minutes before 2PM and ask the staff to keep them chilled in the fridge, We have done that a few times. Some places even come and remind you that soon they can not sell for a few hours.
