Private sector wants Thailand to import Russian oil to combat high fuel prices

Thailand should buy oil and gas from Russia and Iran to tackle rising energy prices, a representative of the private sector said on Monday.

 

“There is a need to look for new energy sources such as Iran or negotiate to buy cheap energy from Russia,” Kriengkrai Thiennukul, the chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) told reporters.

 

The FTI is one of the representatives of the private sector that will join the meeting on the energy crisis that is being arranged by the government and chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha on Monday.

Sanctions on oil and gas are hurting the west because they where brought off by gas prom especially the germans who cosied up to russia

I support Ukraine but the longer the war goes on russia is winning.

The barbarity and genocide of the russian invasion needs protection from NATO a no fly zone they are fighting multiple countries inc belarussia and chechnya.

The bombing of the shopping mall had to be a red line it was terrorism not war.

I guess Thailand doesnt  like the money donated by other countries.  Countries tgat honor the sanctions  against Russia.

Iran are not seen as rehabilitated just yet and Russia are creating a new class of pariah for themselves. That might cause some interesting side effects when dealing with the EU to get trading status up-graded. The US will also have an opinion as will a number of trading partners.

Would it be really so bad if Thailand imports relative cheap gas and oil from Russia?

I am sure many Thais would be happy if the gasoline prices would decrease.

And would Russia stop the war even if nobody would buy their oil and gas anymore?

 

I think it's easy to say: Don't buy anything from the Russians, they are the bad guys.

But then, how about Saudi Arabia? Are those the good guys? Shoud we buy from them?

And how about China?

I am sure we can find a lot of reasons why we shouldn't do any business with lots of countries.

Maybe we should also ban all tourists from those countries.

But then again I am sure many countries will also find reasons why they shouldn't do any business with Thailand or Thai people.

 

It's easy to say: No, we don't collaborate with the bad guys.

But in real life there is not only black and white and the good and the bad guys.

 

Personally I find reasons pro and contra doing business with Russia. At the end of the day I think the question is: What is better for the majority of Thai people? And will all those people who suffer in Thailand from high gasoline prices be happy to pay more to show the bad guys that they shouldn't go to war? I have my doubts.

Thailand has no choice. Oil prices will keep rising due to politicized uneconomic decisions of western leaders. Every single item’s price depends on oil. Some of the forum members have been complaining they stopped going to restaurants because of inflation. From rice to air fares, inflation has been climbing but we’ll be seeing this for years. Thailand’s businesses are trying to prepare to stay afloat. They will pay $100 for barrel of oil and will survive vs $200 that western countries will pay next year.

Thailand and Russia are negotiating to implement MIR payment system that will help Thailand get precious rubles from tourists that Thailand can use to pay for cheap oil. There is also an agreement between these countries to increase mutual trade 10x. Thailand will export to Russia much more than it does now to acquire rubles it will need to pay for energy.

Is it not enough  to supply Thailand's needs? Or do they export it as part of a deal with the drilling companies?

Your "World" and other countries "World" seem to exist in different universes...I went through the Abu Dhabi and Istanbul airports last week, they were packed with Russians going somewhere. And there was a recent BRICS meeting in China with Putin attending together with Modi and Bolsonaro... more than 40% of the world population represented there and they are talking of inviting other countries like Indonesia.

A private person, Company directer or whatever, makes a suggestion--& the voices of ASEAN  tell us that That the country of Thailand ... has morally lost its way.

Do you not think there are dissenting voices in Britain--USA ..EU...etc,  & thats what we are suppose to have in a democracy .

"Leaning" --I think that comes in the category of a "Maybe", -BUT  we are really hoping here in the EU 

that the war is over by the end of the year & we dont have to make such a decision.

 

 On the Ukraine Embassy webb site-- they are thanking the people of Thailand , and pointing out that they now

have opened a special Baht bank acc--as Thai people were just sending money to the Embassy. 7 million baht so far.
