Solar - 8kW Hybrid Inverter w/10kWh (upgraded to 20kWh in Sept. 2022) ESS/battery (not DIY)

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a company in or around Phetchabun with a good reputation to set up a 10Kw Hybrid system.

Thanks.

  • Using about 5kWh overnight, from ESS, and a bit more than I estimated.  That's with intermittent use of AC, fan on all night, both in bdrm.   Along with laptop, TV, int. router, and 2 frigs,

  • Yes, with caveats of course.   You absolutely must have a grid-tie inverter, this is non-negotiable!!   If you have a conventional disc type meter, these will happily spin backward

Those thinking about DIY solar, needing a few outlets, this seems to make it simple.  Something I was concerned about if I did a small system on one of our lots.

Finally, and almost sunny day, and we get to charge the car :cheesy:

Past couple weeks, barely getting back to ESS @ 100% before sunset ...

Adding the 2nd ESS (10kWh for total of 20kWh) was definitely for longevity.   This the season when they would be needed, and TBH, we don't need the second one.

As one crapped out (under warranty) and went back for repair, not replace.  Probably the BMS, as cells were balanced when topped off and as it was discharging, still fairly balanced.

Since on one bank the past month, of overcast & rain, the 10kWh available over night was more than enough, using less than 7kWh over night.  Much less some nights, as really don't need the AC, or even the fan some nights, as the overnight temps are so low.  If using, more for the dehumidifying feature, as raining on/off the past 10 days since returned from an O&A.

With that, if not having the 2nd ESS,  costing 95k baht, the ROI for system would probably be realized at about the end of year 3 - 3.5 maybe.   Lot of that due to charging BEVs and petrol savings.

Even with crappy weather, still plenty of extra solar for charging the BEVs.   Though I do drive the MB if not raining, though been caught 2X already, as started to drizzle on the way back home.   Rain & E-MB, what could go wrong :cheesy:

Happy Savings

Got an update, sort of, on the one returned for repair (under warranty), and they are waiting to here from the manufacturer.   May simply replace it (my preference) instead of repairing.   Didn't state a reason.

July's #s ... and even with the back to back days on rain and little sun, we really don't need the 2nd ESS.

Oily gone solar 🌞 ☀️!

10 kW inverter, 18 x 645 kW panels, 42 kWh batteries 🔋, fully installed for 460,000 baht.

I used a local installer that mainly do large commercial installations. They did the job in 3 days with a 7 man crew. A few Somchai moments, but overall a smooth and fun installations. I had to call in a crew of 4 Burmese to bring the 130 kg batteries up 100 flight of stairs.

The AC/DC combiner box include a smart-meter that connects to Wi-Fi, providing real-time data, a nice supplement to verify the inverter numbers.

Thanks a lot for the valuable advise and information provided by many members here that made this a successful project. Maybe to no surprise, @Crossy saved the day on the 11th hour, by pointing out a typo/mistake in the installation manual. The CT was pointing 👉 in the wrong direction.

How to conserver you ESS long term.   Stay O&A, and only use ~4kWh a day :coffee1:

Our past 30 ish days of use ...

Just over 3 years having solar, and almost reached full ROI, if not having the extra, unnecessary ESS (10Wh) as we only need 10kWh ESS to remain 'off grid'.

The one ESS crapped out, and expect a replacement some time soon, under warranty.  Realize without that, we didn't need it, which I knew anyway, but wanted it for redundancy (thankfully) and longevity.

Highly recommend redundancy of components ...

... two 5 kW inverters instead of one 10kW

... two 10kWh ESS instead of one 20kWh

Expect to hit ROI, by year's end or early next.   A lot of that due to owning 3 BEV, and abusing the AC.

IF DIY, you can knock quite a bit off cost, and depending on age, buy cheaper components, and unless having black outs, really don't need ESS, so you could really cut or eliminate as much as your electric bills that you want with solar.  ROI comes rather fast IMHO, and worth every baht spent.

Saves us about 8-10k THB  a month vs PEA & petrol cost.

Only difference between usage while O&A, wife left a couple lights on.  Beginning of month, used just over 4kWh a day, while late month, just under 4kWh a day.   The latter, just 2 fridges, and a night light on.

Neither fridge extremely large, and 2 people could easily live out of either, as we did the smaller one, before moving to PKK from Udon.   Smaller one was actually a freebie, for spending a couple 100 thousand baht at a vendor while building 2nd house.  Going on 14 yrs old with only 1 repair recently.

You can tell what days it was sunny out, as charging the car back up after returning, the first week of month.   Using the scooter till sun shines after returning last week.  Or could just use the grid if raining and needed to.

Finally, back to off grid again, as replacement ESS finally back on the wall.  OK, it was sitting here for over 2 weeks, as local solar guy wasn't available, and still MIA.

Had AC's cleaned today, 3 man crew, so had them pick it up, and place on the wall mount.   100 baht tip, vs 500 for the solar guys to mount & connect.

I took photos of the disconnect. too many months ago, so reconnecting 3 'plugs' was too easy.

Last month we used 7kWh overnight, which of course could have been avoided.   By either not abusing the AC, better management, or simply setting the reserve at 29% instead of 30% :cheesy:

I don't think we ever used 1kWh of grid overnight.  Didn't even bother with placing logo on unit, since a replacement, which for curious, was covered under warranty.

Hopefully the DEYE quality is consistent, along all levels of their products, direct or rebranded, as I believe ours are, coming with DEYE owner's manuals 👍👍

One of our 10kWh ESS did have an oops, and was replaced via warranty.

Pretty easy to tell which days we charge the car, along with, day before, we're O&A exploring.

Have solar ? ... got to pay attention. Plugged in the car, when producing 2.5kWh, car taking 2.3kWh. BUT, very overcast, and AQI @ 75+, so around noon, noticed with ACs on and washing machine going, only produced 12.5, while using 14.5 and @ 44% ... oops.

Now back at 59%, (11.8kWh) and only sending 2.2kWh to ESS ... doubt if we'll make it back to 100% (20kWh) before sunset.

Little lacks updating thread. 2025, and Jan, Feb 2026.

2025 graph shows, we really didn't need that 2nd ESS, as not much used from the grid, for more than a few months that we didn't have it.
