The rise to power of ‘big brother’ Prawit Wongsuwan, new caretaker PM

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan is generally considered a weak link in Prayut Chan-o-cha’s administration, tainted by the scandal over a multimillion-baht wristwatch collection, despite his repeated denials of corruption. But in a twist of fate, he finally finds himself in the top post of prime minister, thanks to a legal dispute over the tenure of his junior Army classmate.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday voted 5:4 to suspend PM Prayut from duty after it decided to accept a petition filed by the opposition asking for a ruling on his eight-year term as prime minister. Prayut will be suspended as PM until the ruling is delivered, though he can continue to serve as defense minister in the Cabinet.

Prawit, who is leader of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, tops the hierarchy of the six deputy prime ministers, so he automatically became caretaker prime minister following Prayut’s suspension. Prawit will remain as caretaker PM until the Constitutional Court issues its ruling on Prayut’s tenure.

The caretaker PM has full authority to reshuffle the Cabinet or dissolve the House of Representatives, according to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, the government’s legal expert.

I don't believe in 'twist of faith' in Thailand, time will tell what he will do now that he's caretaker PM...

Prawit is definitely more like a caretaker than a Prime Minister.

Care taker is the correct naming, as in been taken care for, as he belongs in a caretaker home

I thought he was the like the retarded kid in class that we included in things just to be nice.

Never though this "basket weaver at best" would be a "caretaker" Caretaker, let alone PM.

Well, other sources referred to Prawatch as the actual power man and puppet master behind the scene. He certainly has as much power and influence as his ability to nap in any thinkable location, position and discussion.
He'll have his 15 minutes of fame before the younger apes are trying to climb the eternal tree of money, corruption and neo-slavery.

Meanwhile others might have a look at Thailand's household debt which is toggling at +/- 90% of the country's GDP - now THAT's much more it. Tip to Prawatch and his friends, fans and underlings in all those government uniforms; take while the taking is good, ensure more submarines without docking port nor engines, funny bridge studies from the mainland to Samui island and a rail system not even the British managed to finish 80 years ago. Thailand - quo vadis?

This guy is the very definition of an empty suit. I do not think he will be in this position for long. Thailand is suffering, and in drastic need to resuscitation. A dinosaur like this guy is the last thing this nation needs. Fresh blood is required. Bring on the youth!

Yes, younger blood.

But, youth and their broader circle that aren't associated with the club.

Otherwise all the wishful thinking and hopes are essentially moot.

Should be noted: wondering what's working in the influential realms?

Twist of fate? Twist of nepotism and ill-gotten riches.  And beneficiary of dead "friends" who had dozens of luxury watches. One sure sign of dick-tater-ship is installing your family members in high ranking position. Not much higher than Ole Brother Fatty as Deputy PM.

He knows where all the bodies are buried.

I do not think he knows where the bodies are . Pumped with concrete and thrown in the river is the favored method .

Prawit has always been the puppet master, allowing Prayut to have the PM seat.

Always a fall-guy required when things go south.
