Of course Powell was a racist; to suggest otherwise is nonsense.  But then so were the vast majority of people who were born and raised in the dying days of the British Empire, Churchill, Mountbatten among them.  Times change and these days they are, thankfully, much fewer in number and possible genuine racism is now a rarity.

He actually admitted it towards the end of his life in 1996.

"What's wrong with racism? Racism is the basis of a nationality. Nations are, upon the whole, united by identity with one another, the self-identification of our citizens, and that's normally due to similarities which are regarded as racial differences."

why was he a racist just because he was against mass immigration or because of the way he treated people?

I take Powell extremely negatively and am rather surprised to see a topic of admiration  towards him. My initial feeling is that he was like the notorious racist George Wallace but here's another theory.

As an American you are excused your ignorance of him and the negative effects mass immigration has had on the uk.

You must have a very odd definition of the word! Being a patriot and against mass immigration does not make anyone a 'racist'

I just love how the nativist right wing think they own the word patriot.

Odd the Racist Powell never predicted better food, better music, better athletes and better everything really.

Going back to live in early 60s UK would be a nightmare.

All those women in head scarves and men smelling of Woodbines.

Nah, leave the Racist Powell where he belongs, in a long dead history.

You'd need to explain how patriotism aligns with being against "mass" immigration to convince anyone of that. Xenophobia IS racism.

Better everything ? my my you forget that England won the world cup in 1966, something no other English  team has done since even considering that they now have mixed race players in the team, so they can't be any better, frankly must only be worse never to have won it since,

Yes i remember how they contributed .i lived  in London when they were rioting and looting in Brixton .such a great way of contributing .

And the precipitators of the Brixton Riots where?

Or do you pretend not to know because you personally were not subjected to abuse by a systematically racist police force?

Read some history.

Read some history.

It won't make any difference. They are so consumed by hate that they can't contemplate anything which challenges their racism.

Enoch Powell is up there with Jordan B Peterson. They both have an insight which is spot on, but unless you listen and actually hear what they are actually saying they can be taken as being prejudiced.

They simply are showing the reality of how things are and how they will progress.

There is no bias or prejudice in their thinking, Just a natural progression of the order of things if the policies in place are allowed to progress.

Powell was absolutely not a racist. He talks about uncontrolled immigration. How it generates fear and that fear will manifest itself as resentment against those who settled. It was the same fear that British people have of uncontrolled immigration that lead to Brexit.

Before you throw racist or misogynistic rhetoric around listen closely to what people are saying. You may not like what they say about the consequences but they are stating facts not using prejudice in their arguments.

Had journalism been to the standard it is today then I'm sure Enoch would have been questioned harder and deeper and then you would be able to see his thinking did not come from a prejudicial viewpoint.

And listen to Jordan B Peterson when others try to twist his words into a prejudicial model. How he corrects them to make sure he is simply stating facts that are the conclusion of empirical evidence.

It is a pity Enoch is not here to correct the overview people have that his words were racist.

Jordan Peterson and Enoch Powell both had their areas of expertise. That didn't prevent them from demonstrating their ignorance outside the fields in which they were knowledgeable enough to make valid judgments..

I draw the line at calling anyone here in this discussion a racist, unless of course they, like the racist Powell overtly express racist views.

I do however observe that Powell is admired and defended by many racists.

There’s a enough wiggle room in that to afford a modicum of plausible deniability to those who feel the need to avail themselves of the opportunity.

If you admire a racist you must be a racist. There's no question that Powell was an avowed racist.

Well yes, I don’t feel the need to defend Powell, his views or those who admire him and his views.

As usual the ignorant racists are looking for the problem to fit their solution.

Ignorant racist ? Well well Enoch Powells academic achievements were quite outstanding which means he could hardly be called ignorant.  Now let's see, how do yours stack up against his so that we may have a fair comparison of the veracity of your comment ?

Since when has academic achievement been the only measure of a person's broader knowledge, education and awareness?

That's almost as absurd as this earlier, fawning but totally unfounded opinion.

It's a good start to be intellectually brilliant, which he was and nobody can deny his predictions came true. Many cities in the UK  became over run with immigrants and changed the nature of them without the host population ever being asked. The present state of lawlessness is unprecedented and it's almost always foreign names as the guilty. Added to that the burden of immigration on housing, schools, NHS and social care is unsustainable, blaming the government for not building enough houses etc is to ignore the obvious. Yet still they come, even on boats escorted by the RNLI, people paying 4-10k are not poor or asylum seekers but the betrayed UK taxpayer has to fork out for these illegals to be put up in 3 star accommodation and looked after forever, just because they are better off leeching off Brits than they would have been back home. Powell was right when he said we must be mad, literally mad.

Let’s just take one single point from your stream of Ill-informed contribution.

The UK’s NHS would collapse tomorrow if not for the tens of thousands of immigrants working to prop it up.
