How little you understand about the British monarchy.The hereditary principle is sacrosanct and in any case the question of popularity is barely relevant.I would go further and argue that the British monarchy is the opposite of celebrity.It's based - at its best - on self denial, duty and service.Elizabeth epitomized this and Charles and William both understand it.

There’s not been one event in recent times that wasn’t either surreal or tragic. The Queen’s death is no exception. My sympathies to her family, the Kingdom and her countless admirers across the globe. We are certainly not the better for her passing. Long live the King. ????❤️????

Hearing the sad news of the death of a much loved and greatly admired person, is a perfect example of when the only thing you should say is respectful of that person’s memory, or do the decent thing and say nothing.

My condolences to her family and all the citizens of all of the countries she reigned over while the Queen.  This woman saw the world change in many ways throughout her 70 years on the Throne...May she Rest in Peace.

she kept her word right to the end and reigned over the country until the day she died, never giving up regardless of health or age. I am sure she’ll be missed by countless people the world over.

The New York Times, February 7th 1952.  Truman was the US President, Churchill was the UK Prime Minister, Elizabeth became Queen.  Even if for no other reason - though there is far, far, more that she did, and should be mourned for - no other world leader links that period with the present.  We have lost an enormous piece of history.
