The surprising details behind DeSantis’ and Abbott’s immigration stunts

Congratulations to the governor of Texas for making life even more difficult for the migrants:

A bus contractor hired by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to transport migrants to New York signed an agreement not talk to NY officials, complicating volunteer efforts to help: report

Manuel Castro, commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, told the AP that complicates efforts to meet and provide resources for migrants being sent from Texas.

"It's a problem because we don't know when the buses are coming, how many buses are coming, if anyone on these buses has medical conditions that they will need help with, if they need a wheelchair,"Castro told the outlet. "We at least want to know that so that we can best help people as they arrive."

I take it you approve of DeSantis using Florida taxpayer money to fund a stunt that does not benefit Florida in any way, but does help him with his re-election campaign and with his future plans to run for President.

Do you approve of all elected officials using taxpayer money to pay for their campaign stunts, or only this one?

Welcome to ignore function.

I assume that means you approve of DeSantis using the kind of corrupt campaign tactics that undermine democracy.  Well, you are a Trump supporter...

It was a stunt. A very mean spirited one at that. Migrants will usually try to head where they have existing connections especially family if they have any. As far as Venezualans they can't be deported back to Venezuala and probably most of them that have connections have them in Florida. Remember when republicans were supportive of refugees from authoritarian regimes when those regimes were communist? An exception was when Castro specifically shipped over LGBT Cubans, the republicans did not like that at all.

The mistake these Venezuelans made was arriving in 2022, when the Republicans are demonizing immigrants and refugees.  If they had arrived in 2020, when the Republicans were demonizing Venezuela and socialism, they might have been welcomed with open arms.

In fact, by using refugees from a brutal, failed socialist government as pawns in his political games, DeSantis may have alienated a great many Latino voters who also fled socialism.  They are an important swing vote in Florida.

Weill be interesting to see what comes of this:

Migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard on planes chartered by DeSantis received a misleading brochure that promised cash, job placement and more, lawyers say

  • Migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard received brochures falsely promising cash and job placement services.
  • They were flown to the Massachusetts island, as a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
  • Lawyers for Civil Rights is seeking a criminal investigation.

The Democrat sheriff in San Antonio opened a criminal probe on another state’s governor for flying migrants to a third state. And he admitted at his televised news conference he didn’t know any potential (predicate) crimes that were violated.

AG Garland, FBI raids, special counsel!

Or maybe the obvious solution is to enforce border security and prevent illegal immigration. Liberals are the problem.

Or maybe to make employing undocumented aliens a serious felony with lots of prison time imposed.. Conservatives are the problem.

The immigrants/refugees were rounded up in Texas using lies and abandoned in Martha's Vineyard (not where they were told they were going) without any assistance.  That means part of the illegal actions took place in Texas.

Hopefully someone in Florida will investigate the use of taxpayer money that was supposed to be used to keep illegal immigrants out of Florida (enforcing laws against hiring illegal immigrants would have done that) for an election campaign stunt.

Migrants sue Florida governor for being flown to Martha’s Vineyard under “fraudulent” scheme

Venezuelan migrants flown to the upscale Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard sued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his transportation secretary Tuesday for engaging in a “fraudulent and discriminatory scheme” to relocate them.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boston, alleges that the migrants were told they were going to Boston or Washington, “which was completely false,” and were induced with perks such as $10 McDonald’s gift certificates.

“No human being should be used as a political pawn,” said Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, executive director of Lawyers for Civil Rights, which is seeking class-action status in the lawsuit filed on behalf of several migrants who were aboard last week’s flights and Alianza Americas, a network of advocacy groups.

It's a vacation destination that greatly slows down after Labor Day and pretty much closes down for the winter. You don't know that? Actually, the locals were very welcoming to the migrants. You think the migrants want to stay long term on a small island with very limited resources?

There is every resource available on Martha's Vineyard year round.  There are for sure 50 jobs available as well. You act like it's some backwards hick island when in fact it's one of the nicest wealthiest places in the United States with tons of empty mansions from now till June for sweet accommodations. The Massachusetts national guard were called in to ship them off in 44 hours!  What a joke. Now they are back in Cape Cod and will probably soon be in the Boston area using their McD's coupons and of course playing with their expensive phones and all wearing very decent clothes. I'm here watching it on TV now.  I don't watch CNN however. I was however in both Nantucket and Martha vineyard AFTER Labor Day this year. Both places were very busy and I was there during the week. I have pics for you. You seem to know an awful lot.

Your source said they were taken up and down the coast. Perhaps you aren't too familiar with American geography...

Perhaps you are not... Florida makes up only 580 miles of a total 2,100 miles of Atlantic coast. Only about 27%... leaving 73% of "up the coast".

That they allow unvetted immigrants in at all is mind boggling.  I agree, they should be shipped to the states of the politicians that voted to do so.

They were NOT "unvetted immigrants", they were vetted Venezuelan asylum-seekers. You know, the special ones, like Cubans, who are fast-tracked because of the communist regimes they are escaping.

Two things.  Where is your source that these people were vetted?  A significant portion of migrants show up with no papers at all.

Secondly, asylum has become the "magic word" that those who are pushing illegal migration tell the migrants to use.  At one time it was "families" and unaccompanied males were rejected so they showed up with children many times not their own but rented so that they would be a "family"

One way or another in less than two years 5.4 million people have swarmed across into the USA.  That is a population greater than New Zealand, Ireland, or Norway.  That is not immigration.  That is an invasion.

Calling these people undocumented immigrants is as disingenous as calling a drug dealer an undocumented pharmacist, or someone who breaks into your home an undocumented guest.

IT IS AGAINST THE LAW to enter the USA without proper authorization.  If they are truly assylum seekers and can prove it, they should apply and have their cases heard.  Not just make some unvetted claim about needing asylum and then letting them vanish within the borders of the USA to be somebody elses problem.

Castro opened the jails and sent criminals.  The same as what those third world countries are doing now.

Gays were imprisoned in Cuba just for being gay.

Here are a few more surprising details.. The state law that Desantis used to transport this asylum seekers specifies that those to be transported are unauthorized. But these people aren't unauthorized. They are in the USA legally now. What's even worse is the airline company that's reaping in the big bucks (contract is worth $12 million) is a major donor to super Pacs supporting Republican candidates in Florida. What's more, Desantis refuses to release the contract for public inspection.

Also, let's not forget, he used Florida tax money for what is clearly a campaign stunt.  I am puzzled as to why he is not being charged with misuse of public money.

Well, it's still early days. It does seem he violated the Florida law.

Don't look now, but khun Trump has some choice words for his former buddy DeSantis.  We can expect more nastiness from Trump if DeSantis continues to gain in popularity....

[The 45th president called the Florida governor “fat,” “phony,” and “whiny" when Haberman asked about him during a meeting late this summer at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. It is not clear if Trump offers additional disparaging remarks about DeSantis that are documented in the book and not the Atlantic article.]
