Ever get frustrated at never being able to find parking space when you are out in town?

 

It can really be a problem during the weekend when there is extra traffic on the roads.

 

Or worse, finding what looks like a suitable parking space only to discover that someone placed some kind of obstacle in order to prevent you and others from parking.

 

You will likely have seen it before. In fact, it can be an all too common site in towns and cities across Thailand – people putting objects in the road to save a parking space outside of their property.

 

They normally put plastic chairs, tyres or old plant pots, but really nothing is off limits.

Obstructions to parking are quite common at Big C; however, as it is private property the owners make the rules.

I drive an old Land Rover with big crashbars on the front. Not often, but on occasion I just push the stuff out of the way, take a pic and walk off. When I come back I check for nails around my tyres!

Their property boundaries are identified on the Chanote. 

No one owns the roads space. 

 

I pay road tax, this allows me to park on the public road.

I remember being in MaeSot years ago... they had the same thing...  cones and stools outside on the road to block people from parking. 

 

I needed to park... I pulled up and asked a ‘grumpy looking old lady if I could park there for 20 mins.. she smile, moved a cone and stool and I parked’.... surprised the s#it out of me.... 

 

I guess the issue is for some shophouses etc its the only parking they have for their car etc.

Still annoying, but they have to be able to park somewhere themselves too.

Parked my pick up and came back to find a traffic cone at the front and rear ( in line with the wheels) Reversed and flattened one then drove forward and flattened the other. Did check there was nothing inside them first.

What's your choice if it's clear when you park and then find cones or chairs in front of and behind your car when you come back.

how many times do the police go past these obstructions on any given day and do nothing - that just sums it up right there

Of course if you move said objects then you could end up with your car being keyed or your tyres slashed. 

And then the police would have no choice but to act and prosecute you for moving the chairs...

Who ever doing it knows very well that this is wrong, they wouldn't be doing that unless they have some clout and a say in that area, try to move and you'll cope a verbal abuse or worse...

Who are you going to point to if you find nails in your tyres or your car has been keyed down the side? You might suspect the shop owner, but proving it might prove difficult.

They're both trying to claim a space that they don't own.

so yes, it's efficiently the same. 

they do it in parking lots sometiems as well. The passanger will jump out the car out to find a spare parking space and stand in free space until the driver parks the car. Again, trying to claim a a space/area  that it not theirs. 

it's the typical 'me first' mentality that exists here.

What about the motorbike taxi guys? They constantly claim a big swath of parking spaces they don't need and complain if you try  to park a bike in section of the street they claim. I doubt that will change before it snows in Bangkok ????

I, of course, am for this and hope it's enforced a little more thoroughly. Also, I'd like to see better arrangements made for parking motorbikes so one or two don't take up a car-sized parking space.

Heard it all before. It'll never be enforced and Thais know this. Hope I'm wrong but I won't hold my breath!
