Government opposition ‘Pheu Thai’ party to reintroduce its policy of War on Drugs, including cannabis, following Nong Bua Lamphu mass shooting

They are on the wrong side of history. And the timing could not be worse. At a time when they need to be seen as progressive, to counter the regressive and failed policies of the ruling party, they are doing the opposite. This is very dumb, reactionary, and knee jerk stupidity.

They have virtually eliminated themselves from contention. So, who remains, as the anti dinosaur party?

Expect this policy to be modulated..

Cannabis is going to bring a lot of income to the Issan region..

Money talks.

So is cannabis.....

Alcohol is not acceptable in many societies, mine included. Causes far more trouble than it's worth!

sorry,  I don't accept your argument that drug addicts are not criminals, I can tell you there are hundreds if not thousands of drug addicts in Thailand that are criminals and/or involved in criminal activity.... how else can they buy their fix ....   one would have to be very naive to think otherwise.

Everyone knows right from wrong .....   everyone chooses which path he or she takes,   so a level headed kid at school would know that drugs are wrong so he's not going down that road even though his mate decides to try it ....   So there's no excuse or argument that the drug addict choose his wrong path ... he made his choice ....   surely you can understand that.

All this from a man who believes shooting people in his first post of the day is a solution to the problem.

Maybe you should reflect on yourself as a person before casting judgement in very broad and inaccurate strokes on other people.

Any person who thinks shooting people is a solution is probably a criminal of the highest order. Wouldn't you agree?

How about a policy of not recruiting meth-addicted people for the police force ????

Some folks like to take drugs ....  and some don't ....    ok ...  maybe not shoot them but at least incarcerate them.  enough on this drug topic.

lets try another subject shall we ...  Lol

nothing wrong with having a beer mate ....  it's quite legal.    Don't think taking meth or heroin is legal or good anyway ....  or last time I looked it wasn't.

Depends where you are, having a beer could get you beheaded in some countries.

Jesus, what an autocratic dictatorial and plain obtuse point of view. No wonder some people here like dictators.

Maybe you should find out how high up in Thai society the "drug makers" go. Then perhaps change your avatar.

tell that to the young teens and families that heroin and meth were introduced to and destroyed.

What does incarceration result in? Do they rehabilitate them, work on solving their problems, prepare them for a fruitful return to society?
No they sit in overcrowded prisons with nothing to occupy their time except- get this- doing more yaba. Theres more yaba in the prisons than on the street.

Thanks, Steven for not killing them.  Should we start killing alcoholics, and the manufacturers, dealers. Alcohol remains the most dangerous drug.  "But society accepts it" just like it accepts corruption, guns, prostitution. But lets kill druggies, uhh, because I don't do drugs.

Moot point- teenagers don't have access to heroin.   Why keep commenting on a subject you have zero knowledge on but just a lot of pent up prejudice.

And where the heck have you been, Herion is like 100$ a fix and crack, ice, meth are $5.

Keep talking, keep showing your ignorance on a topic you have no knowledge, only "feelings"

I don't like these drugs, I don't do these drugs, I wish these drugs were gone.

But I don't declare myself a god and dictate what others should do. I also don't suggest who should or shouldn't be killed.

Cmon, don't be so foolish. The war on drugs has been battled for the last 70 years. Governments spent billions, guess what, drugs won the war. Reality, face it.

To sums it all up.. Drugs are here to stay, the huge amount of money that the drug industry turns  can buy power, clout and even enemies not not mention life of super luxury, and when you have corrupt government, army and police all the more reasons why drugs will be here for ever...

You see no difference between cannabis and say PCP or heroin ?  I think your rational thinking could do with some improvement.

not those drug makers,  I mean the meth, heroin and yaba makers.

@MrFill makes a valid point; the world has a grossly overmedicated population. Indeed, prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the US and Europe. And prescription drugs (especially painkillers) kill more Americans than heroin, cocaine, and smoking combined. Another study linked statins to a higher risk of diabetes and other health disorders.

So be careful what you take, folks. Sadly, people are too quick to accept whatever DRUGS doctors tell them without questioning the said substance.

But none of this makes sense unless you accept the recognized channels of expert opinion, of course. I refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), PubMed.gov, and others.

Thaksin's War On Drugs was very popular in 2003 as many people were being Killed, Mugged and by drug dealers and drug addicts and drugs. But seriously don't think it's going to the right policy now even in Isarn Pheu Thai's home turf people are Ganga crazy. Funny why so many foreigners here defend drug abuse.

you may accept drug addicts and producers .....  but society doesn't.

I just don't get it '      your ok with having drug addicts on the streets ?    at the very least they need to be incarserated or is that too harsh in your book.

Absolute nonsense that has been proven time and time again to be the wrong way to handle drug abuse and those that have become addicted.
The best example is Portugal who decriminalized the public and private use, acquisition, and possession of all drugs in 2000. They basically moved it from a criminal activity to a health issue and the drug-induced death rate has plummeted to five times lower than the E.U. average and stands at one-fiftieth of the United States’. Its rate of HIV infection has dropped from 104.2 new cases per million in 2000 to 4.2 cases per million in 2015. Drug use has declined overall among the 15- to 24-year-old population, those most at risk of initiating drug use.   https://time.com/longform/portugal-drug-use-decriminalization/

The war on drugs was lost a LONG time ago and new ideas are desperately needed but brave moves such as Portugal have made are often halted by (mostly right-wing) politicians who go over the same old tired solutions of 'string 'em up!" and 'zero-tolerance' knowing they absolutely don't work but appeal to people such as yourself who have little understanding of the problem but equally refuse to educate themselves and consider alternatives that have been proven to be much, much better.

Filling prisons with people who would benefit more from help rather than punishment just doesn't work (and hasn't worked for decades) so unless you can start becoming part of the solutions, you should at least stop being part of the problem.

Of course, if some guy is s**t-faced drunk as goes on a murder spree, well, everything is just hunky-dory.  No call to outlaw Thai whiskey and alcohol as the 'connected' booze monopoly is simply too powerful.  But blame a mass-murder's killing spree on cannabis.  Ridiculous.  The Thaksin led ‘Pheu Thai’ was all onboard for extra-judicial executions of anyone accused of dealing drugs back in Thakin's regime.  That should tell you everything you need to know.

Not accurate. Government employees (including police officers) can buy firearms without tax (which is a big part of the weapon price). They can sell it in the free market (after both parties get the proper documents) after 5 years.
