Pol Gen Surachate Hakpan - Big Joke - flew into Prakhonchai district via helicopter last night to join local investigators in drawing a line under the death of a 23 year old local man earlier this month.

Relatives thought it was murder, but the police said it was suicide.

Thanathat or "Nam" Chankae had arrived back from abroad but just days later he was found burnt in Salaeng Ton School, reported Thai Rath.

Surachate put the details into what his underlings had managed to discover.

Thanathat came back from Germany on the 7th.

He had been there with his mother for 3 years.

He went to Pattaya.

Then he went to his wife's house on the 9th when the incident took place.

He was seen absent mindedly walking around the area. He was seen holding what appeared to be a bottle of gasoline after going to a coin-op gas dispenser.

He was covered in burns, said medics, yet had not a single other injury.

They deemed suffocation as the cause of death and believed that the victim had self-immolated in a seated position.

He had a long history of manic depression and needed medication for his mental health issues.

He was also having jealous arguments with his wife and was involved in other family disputes.

The decision was that Thanathat took his own life.

The family have refused to cremate his remains as the case was not resolved but they are now planning on a cremation in the next 2/3 days.

The wife of the deceased expressed dissatisfaction at being portrayed as a major reason for her husband's death.

The case has been widely discussed in Thailand and other details can be found here.

Interesting that no other policeman could have figured this out.

Even more interesting that that was never stated to be the case.

Definitely wife is primary suspect….
I first heard that he was found with stab wounds.. now it’s suffocation ..hmmmm

Only in Thailand would one of their top police guys be called 'Big Joke', but I'll bet he's a lot of fun to party with.

I would imagine most people wanting to kill themselves would NOT use self immolation. Surviving it would be unthinkable.

Can’t be suicide. He didn’t tie his hands behind his back before he poured petrol over himself!!

“Manic depression”, an archaic term for bipolar disorder, completely distorts one’s sense of the outside and inner world. I have it but it is under control. Those of you who don’t know anything about it, pretty much all of you, have no standing or credibilty to comment on it. Irrational acts such as this are common when in a suicidal state.

Or an arsonists ultimate delight?

Poor guy. Murky business. he should have stayed abroad.

One of my niece's husband's employees did. I think it's not that uncommon in Thailand. The relation between employee and small business employer in upcountrry Thailand is often family-like. The business owners throw parties at least once a week for everybody, sometimes two or three if there are birthdays. Although this guy had shown symptoms of depression on previous occasions, he had seemed in good spirits for several days before this party, and he had joined in the drinking and singing. About ten o'clock he took a bottle of gasoline, walked about thirty meters outside the compound, poured the bottle over his head and lit a cigarette lighter. By the time the others got to him and put the fire out he was already dead. Nobody knows what, exactly, drove him to the act, but he was another victim of bipolar disorder.

General joke helicopter case solved although there was no case next case suggest General Prawit and work your way up ????

Actually, Big Joke is more like Batman , as soon as a crime is committed anywhere in the Country , he immediately rushes off there to solve the crime .

Many here are nicknamed after their favourite dish. Obviously he has eaten too much of it since he was thrown out of immigration.

Does flying in by helicopter reflect this man's sense of self aggradizement? No time for the highways he refuses to do anything about? Does he realize nobody takes him seriously? Banished once, only to be installed in his much beloved limelight once again.

I believe it was used as a method of protest by Buddhist monks

And if any of us nobodies comment again you'll be around to empty your petrol can on us and then claim you didn’t know what you were doing?

The one to worry about is Lt. Big Gun

Big Joke is in the process of having his men infiltrate most of the larger police forces. They then report to him, and in turn he is prosecuting any of the cops who are on the take etc. Supposedly he is being quite successful in this endeavor. So he’s not such a Big Joke after all. Most of you on here want the corruption to be handled and changed…..now it’s being done.
